FORT WORTH - It's been 728 days since Texas Wesleyan Women's Soccer (9-3-1, 4-1-1 SAC) tied in a game. The last time was October 18, 2016 was when the University of Science and Arts-Oklahoma (11-3-1, 3-1-1 SAC) came to town and Tuesday Night, relocated to Scarborough-Handley Field due to heavy rains, history repeated itself in a 1-1 draw for Texas Wesleyan and USAO.
The tie lifted the Lady Rams to first place, however, in the Sooner Athletic Conference standings. The 4-1-1 Rams have the edge on 4-1 Central Christian due to the double overtime thrilling victory played at Martin Field September 29. The 16th-ranked nationally Drovers are now in a three-way tie with No. 7 John Brown and Oklahoma City, who received votes in the most recent coaches poll.
For most of the game, the Drovers kept possession and had plenty of opportunities to capitalize. But the Rams defenders held their ground, the midfield did enough to stop an onslaught and the combination of
Christy Zwart and
Lauren Bond in goal proved to be a difference maker.
Four of Zwart's saves came in the first 14 minutes when USAO tried to pounce early. Despite getting out-shot 27-6 on the night, it was the Lady Rams that struck first. In the 44th minute, USAO Goalkeeper Brandi Hutchinson rushed to clear a ball away from the oncoming danger that is
Tameir Grosvenor's offense and mishandled the save, leaving an empty net for Grosvenor to notch her 18th goal of the season. It was just the second shot of the game for Texas Wesleyan and it gave way to confidence the Lady Rams were about to take complete command of the SAC.
But the Drovers kept attacking. Eight shots and three corner kicks later, USAO found its moment. In the 64th minute, Cristina Ramos tied the game on a bouncing ball in the box - USAO had finally gotten their tying answer.
In the overtime periods, USAO out-shot the Lady Rams 4-0, but
Lauren Bond was only needed to make one save. Overall, Zwart finished with six saves and Bond had four collections.
