FORT WORTH - Hat tricks don't usually happen more than once a season, or even at all. For
Tameir Grosvenor, they've become an art form. Tuesday night was her fifth in the last two years and it helped Texas Wesleyan University Women's Soccer (7-3, 2-1 SAC) to a 3-0 shutout triumph over Oklahoma City University (3-1-3, 1-1-1 SAC).
But there was something different about this hat trick. It didn't come in a 10-0 rout of a team who was looking to play up. No, this hat trick came in conference, her first against Sooner Athletic Conference competition. It was the first hat trick in conference play for Texas Wesleyan Women's Soccer since
McKenzie Dyer did it last season against SAGUÂ and it's the first hat trick in a game in which the Lady Rams only scored three goals since
Theresa Garsztecki scored all of the team's goals on August 29, 2015.
"We were dangerous in the final third with (
Taylor Ross), (Grosvenor) and (
Drea Molina)," said Head Coach
Josh Gibbs. "We were solid in the middle of the field. The backline fought off a dangerous OCU attack and the goalkeepers were brilliant. I'm very proud of our players."
While Texas Wesleyan only out-shot Oklahoma City 11-9 and did not earn a corner kick, the Lady Rams made their opportunities count. Ross assisted Grosvenor in the 24th minute, while Molina connected with Grosvenor in the 79th. Grosvenor also moved the net in the 73rd. Grosvenor, sitting at 15 goals, leads the SAC.
It's the second time in three seasons Texas Wesleyan has blanked the Stars. After three early looks in the first 15 minutes, OCU did not attempt another shot before the end of the half. Three second-half shots sailed high and Ram goalkeeper
Christy Zwart didn't see much action until her only save came in the 87th minute.
"I'm very proud of this win," Gibbs said. "All the credit goes to the players. We've had some rough performances lately, but tonight, their belief in what we know we are - and determination to show that - was really impressive. We'll rest up and get back to work, excited for another opportunity Saturday at SCU."
WHAT'S NEXT
Southwestern Christian and SAGUÂ on the road, Friday and Tuesday, respectively. Neither team is seeing the early-conference success like the Lady Rams, who have won two straight. Southwestern Christian is 1-1 but beat SAGUÂ 4-0, who is sitting at the bottom of the conference at 0-3.
