Volleyball takes care of John Brown, SAGU next

SILOAM SPRINGS, AR – Texas Wesleyan Volleyball (19-9, 14-3 SAC) won its 14th conference game Saturday afternoon, cleaning up against the John Brown (13-14, 12-6 SAC) in straight sets (25-23, 25-21, 25-19).

Four different attackers had at least eight kills, led by Sasha Robinson's 11. She also led the team in assists, with 25, falling just two digs short of a triple-double. Tierra Coverson hit .353 with nine kills, Chastiny Brown had nine kills and Jasmine Creek added eight, to go along with 10 digs.

Brenda Pargas contributed a double-double (11 assists, 15 digs). Brianna Sitton kept 12 plays alive with her always-stingy defense.

Both teams' serve game was on point. John Brown had six aces of their own, but the Lady Rams had seven – Pargas with three, Sarah Benitez with two and Ashley Curry with two. Aces were the difference in Set 1, breaking a 21-21 tie with back-to-back beauties from Curry. Up 24-23, Benitez came in off the bench, getting the ball to hit the floor on the other end to give Texas Wesleyan a 1-0 match lead.

The Rams actually erased a 20-15 deficit in Set 1 with a 10-3 finish. In Sets 2 and 3, Texas Wesleyan kept their distance, building five-point leads later in each game staying ahead down the stretch.

SIX IN A ROW
Texas Wesleyan has defeated John Brown in volleyball six straight meetings, including three won in the fifth set. This was the first time Texas Wesleyan swept a top four SAC team in 2018 and the second time the Lady Rams have swept a team they needed five sets to defeat earlier in the season (Southwestern Christian).

RECORD WATCH
Sasha Robinson needs 64 assists to reach 2,000 for her career. With three regular season games remaining, the conference tournament and hopefully another NAIA Tournament appearance, her milestone is imminent. With the next four games at the Sid Richardson Center, she'll likely get to this mark in front of Rams fans. The do-it-all Lady Ram is enjoying career highs in blocks and kills despite dealing with a minor injury earlier this season.

WHAT'S NEXT
Texas Wesleyan has a chance to show just how much they've improved over the season, when the Lady Rams host the first-place Southwest Assemblies of God Lady Lions Tuesday night on campus. SAGU is 25-2 this season (16-1 in SAC), but did recently suffer a four-set loss to Oklahoma City – the same way the Lady Rams went through their last defeat.

SAGU has had the Lady Rams number as of late, winning the last three, but Texas Wesleyan has dominated the all-time series, 28-9. The Lady Rams are two games back of the Lady Lions in the standings, with Oklahoma City squeezed in between them at 16-2.
