FORT WORTH - Texas Wesleyan Volleyball (20-9, 15-3 SAC) in front of a boisterous crowd at the Sid Richardson Center Tuesday night, crushing the No. 23 Southwest Assemblies of God Lady Lions (25-3, 16-2 SAC) in three sets, 25-21, 25-15, 25-23.
It was the first time SAGU has been swept in a Sooner Athletic Conference game since October 28, 2016 against Southwestern Christian. SAGUÂ was swept just once last season, but not in the NAIA. The Lions were swept in the semifinals of the NCCAA Semifinals.
The victory came from consistency. The Lady Rams were dialed in from the get-go, hitting at least .200 in all three sets - .205 in Set 1, .257 in Set 2 and .250 in Set 3.
Sasha Robinson, fresh off her Sooner Athletic Conference Player of the Week nod, tied a career high with four service aces after only producing one in the first meeting.
Set 3 was the defining set, as Texas Wesleyan refused to let SAGUÂ capture any momentum. The game was tied at 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 and then after the Lady Rams pulled ahead 21-18, tied again at 22 and 23 as the Lions made their final push. A kill from
Brittni Mohle and an attacking error did SAGUÂ in. Kali Shaw had two attacking errors that helped the Lady Rams build the 21-18 advantage. Shaw, who leads the conference in kills and led all attackers in the first meeting with 14, had 13 hitting .156 Tuesday.
For Texas Wesleyan,
Chastiny Brown came up big again in another big game, notching 10 kills, hitting .471 - hitting over .450 for the third time in her last six outings. Mohle had eight kills while
Jasmine Creek and
Hannah Altman contributed seven. For Altman, that tied a season high. Robinson and Pargas split passing duties, with Robinson coming away with 16 assists, Pargas 15. Robinson is now just 23 assists from 2,000 career connected passes.
Brianna Sitton led the defense with 18 digs, with Robinson piling on 17. With the victory, Texas Wesleyan improves to 29-9 all-time against the rival Lions.
The Lady Rams pulled ahead in the first set with a 5-0 run, stretching the lead to 8-4. Mohle had two kills and Robinson had two aces during that stretch. In Set 2, Texas Wesleyan turned a 15-10 lead into a 21-10 beatdown. Brown had two kills and Mohle added one in the spurt. SAGU never led by more than two points.
CAN STILL BE CAUGHT
With the victory, Texas Wesleyan now trails SAGUÂ by one game in the conference standings, with Oklahoma City also in the mix for tournament positioning at 16-2. The Rams don't hold the tiebreaker with the Stars (swept). With SAGU also having the same two opponents remaining as the Rams, and Oklahoma City hosting slightly more talented squads in Wayland Baptist (9-9) and Oklahoma Panhandle State (7-11), the conference standings are unlikely to change much ... but that's why they play the games. After Tuesday, John Brown has fallen behind and is now a distant fourth in the standings at 12-6.
WHAT'S NEXT
Texas Wesleyan finishes off the Sooner Athletic Conference regular season with a two-game homestand Friday against the University of Science and Arts and Saturday against Mid-America Christian, serving as Senior Day. The Lady Rams earned sweeps against both opponents on the road earlier this season.
