FORT WORTH, TX: The 23rd ranked Texas Wesleyan University baseball team channeled the spirit of the Winter Olympics at Sycamore Park on Saturday. With temperatures in the low 30's and wind chills in the low 20's the Rams (5-1) topped Jarvis Christian University (2-5) by a final score of 11-8.
The win capped off a three-game series sweep for the Rams.
Jarvis pitchers had trouble getting a feel for the ball and the strike zone. In the first inning, the Rams sent 14 men to the plate and scored 10 runs on two hits, seven walks, and two hit-batters. Starter Ismael Lopez walked five of the eight batters he faced. Joel English came on in relief and walked two and hit two of the next six batters.
Kiki Menendez walked and scored early in the first. With two outs and six runs already across, Menendez came up again, this time with the bases loaded, and crushed a grand slam that capped off the 10-run frame.
The Bulldogs chipped away at a 10-1 deficit with a pair of runs in the second, third, and fourth innings before
Brad Sugg entered in relief and restored order to the contest.
Back-to-back doubles from Menendez and freshman
Kaden Brown pushed the score to 11-7. The Bulldogs managed an unearned run in the eighth, but
Alex Davis closed the door in the ninth to pick up his first save of the season.
Sugg (1-0) allowed just the one unearned run on two hits while striking out eight in four innings of work.
Menendez was 2-for-4 with a double, a homerun, and four RBI to pace the offense. Texas Wesleyan scored their 11 runs on nine hits, seven walks and four hit batters.
The Rams are back in action on Tuesday, when they host UT-Dallas at Sycamore Park. That game is scheduled for a 2pm Start.
