Rams Broom Warriors

FORT WORTH, TX: The 23rd ranked Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (8-2, 3-0 SAC) earned a series sweep of Bacone College (2-9, 0-3 SAC) at Sycamore Park on Sunday. The Rams posted a 7-5 comeback win in game one before overpowering the Warriors 14-1 in game two.

After a 40-minute rain delay in game one, the Rams came back from a 4-0 deficit to take a 7-5 win on Kiki Menedez go-ahead home run smash to left field.

The Warrior put together a 4-run first inning Alex Dominguez single home a run, followed by a Hector Chirinos RBI base hit to right field. Blake Springer capped the drive with a line drive double to deep right center for two more scores.

The Rams made some noise in the fourth inning after working five walks out of Bacone starter Gage Staiger. Staiger had five strikeouts before the rain delay, but the Ram bats were patient enough to get a pair of runs after the delay. Micheal Davila plated a run on a groundout before Brooks Wallace earned a RBI on a bases loaded walk to cut the lead to 5-2.

TXWES finally broke through in the sixth. Ryan Breaud made it a one-run game with a RBI groundout to first base. Menedez crushed a two-run blast over the left field wall to give the Rams a 6-5 edge. Jacob Barfield added an insurance run after a single to right field led to a stolen base that led to a score after an errant throw to make a 7-5 lead.

Corley Huffstickler (1-1) picked up the win. The senior from Frisco, TX rebounded after a tough first inning to get the win in six innings of work. Huffstickler gave up five runs on five hits, walked two, and struck out seven.

Alex Davis (3) earned his second save in as many days. Davis worked another spotless inning to put game one to bed.

In game two, the Rams absolutely overpowered the Warrior pitchers, to the tune of 14 runs on 17 hits. Bacone tied the game at one apiece in the fourth, but the Rams went on a seven run rally in the bottom half of that same inning and piled on another six runs in the sixth.

Menedez stayed hot, going 3 for 4 with four RBI. Davila went 2 for 3 with three RBI in the win. Joseph Barfield had a 3 for 4 game with a RBI to boot. Julio Ibarra went 2 for 3 with a pair of RBI for the Rams.

Brad Sugg (2-0) went six strong innings on the way to his second win of the early season. The senior from Burleson, TX allowed one run on four hits, walked one, struck out five.

The Rams will stay home and take on Texas College in double header action on Tuesday, February 20. Game one is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start.
