Rams Take 6-4 Win Over SCU

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (9-2, 4-0 SAC) held off Southwestern Christian University to take a 6-4 win at Brewer High School baseball diamond on Sunday.

The clouds of dreary rain that dominated most of last week finally moved on, making way for a beautiful day in Fort Worth. A day the Rams made the most of, staying in control from first pitch.

The Rams wasted no time, sprinting out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, starting with a Donnie Lopez lead-off double to right-center. Ted Wisdom plated the first run on a rip up the middle, before Michael Davila hit a two-run double down the left field line to cap the drive.

The Eagles got on the board in the third, with a Manny Lopez RBI double in the right-center gap to make it a 3-1 game.

TXWES responded in the fifth, with a Cory Gallegos home run that landed well beyond the left-center wall. Jake Salinas worked a walk in the next at bat, then advanced to third after a pick-off attempt went flying over the outstretched glove of first baseman Slayton Vaughan

SCU added a runs in the fifth and seventh innings to make it a 5-3 game, but Cory Gallegos singled home an insurance run in the eighth to push the lead three.

Luke Jones was able to line a RBI base hit in the gap to start the ninth, but Alex Davis caught Jamin Lira looking to get the final out and earn his fourth save of the season.

Steven Yancey looked sharp once again, and the senior is off to strong start in 2018. He threw seven innings, gave up three runs, two earned, on five hits, allowed one walk, and sat down seven.

Davis (4), tossed the final two innings. He allowed one run on one hit, walked two, struck out two.

Gallegos went 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBI.   Davila was 1 for 4 with a pair of RBI. Ted Wisdom had a 3 for 4, one RBI performance.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow, February 26, in a double header starting at 12:30 p.m.
