TEXARKANA, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University softball team (2-3) split day two of the Texas A&M – Texarkana tournament. The Lady Rams won a 9-6 back and forth battle with the Eagles before falling 9-1 to No. 20 LSU – Alexandria at Bramlett Field on Saturday.
The Lady Rams and Eagles went three scoreless innings, but scored at least a run between themselves in the remaining four.
TXWES struck first with a two-run fourth.
Taylor Sutton smacked one through the left side for a score, before
Saeya Esparza added a second with a liner into left.
The Eagles came back in the bottom of the inning with a Raylee Hodges three-run blast to straight away center to take a 3-2 lead.
The Lady Rams were not done though, adding a three runs on a two-out rally in the fifth.
Kayla Prachyl and
Jenna Rhoades each hit singles to set up an Eagles error, allowing the first run.
Bailey Terry extended the inning with a 2 RBI worm-burner through the left side to make it a 5-3 TXWES lead.
The Eagles responded with three extra base hits that plated two for another tie at five apiece.
The Lady Rams just kept hitting, taking six hits and four runs for a 9-5 lead in the sixth inning. All nine made it to the plate in the inning, as
Savannah Brixey broke the tie with a shot back up the middle. Rhoades and
Lauren Wernet added a score each with base hit into left field. Rhoades scored on a throwing error for the sixth.
TAMUT managed just one run in response in the next two innings, giving the Lady Rams a two-game sweep of the Eagles.
Sidney Stewart (1-2) outlasted the Eagles in the win, allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits, to go along with three walks and three strikeouts in seven innings of work.
The Lady Rams started in a 3-0 hole in round two against the Generals. Three errors led to three runs, but TXWES was able to get one back in second inning.
Katherine Knotts came through with a RBI single up the middle in a pinch hit spot to get the Rams on the board.
LSUA secured two runs in the third and fifth inning, before adding insurance runs in the sixth and seventh to pull away with a 9-1 win.
The Lady Rams return to action with another five games in two days at the Cowtown Classic on February 9-10. Texas Wesleyan will play Bethel College at 9:00 a.m., Bethany College at 1:00 p.m., and Bellevue University at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, before taking on Baker University at 11:00 a.m. and the University of Houston-Victoria at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
