FORT WORTH, TX: The No. 23 Texas Wesleyan University Baseball team (4-1) swept a double header to open up their series against Jarvis Christian College (2-4) on Friday. The Rams took game one by a score of 2-1 and exploded for an 11-4 win in game two.
In game one, senior right-hander
Stephen Yancey dominated the Bulldogs for the complete game win to advance to 2-0 on the year. Yancey struck out seven Jarvis hitters in the game and allowed just three hits.
The Rams' offense took advantage of some early miscues by the Jarvis defense. Jarvis defense made three errors in the game, all three of which came in the first two innings. In the bottom of the second inning, with runners on second and third,
Ted Wisdom hit a low line drive that the shortstop misplayed allowing
Julio Ibarra and
Ryan Breaud to score to take a 2-0 lead.
That was all the Rams needed in game one, as
Stephen Yancey went the distance, giving up just one run.
In game two, the Rams took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after back-to-back doubles by
Michael Davila and
Cory Gallegos. Davila's double scored
Kiki Menendez to put the Rams up 1-0. Gallegos, then doubled home courtesy runner
Logan Bistrup to make the score 2-0.
In the third inning, Davila hit a solo home run off of the leftfield foul pole to put give the Rams a 3-1 cushion. The Bulldogs fought back in the 5th inning, taking a 4-3 lead on starter
Corley Huffstickler. Huffstickler went 5 innings, striking out two, walked none, and gave up four runs, two of which were unearned.
The Rams' offense exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Ted Wisdom put the Rams ahead for good after his sacrifice fly scored
Ryan Breaud to push the score to 5-4. The biggest contributor to the rally was infielder
Joseph Barfield who went 2-for-2 in the inning with two singles. Barfield's first hit led off the inning to start the rally, and the second drove in two runs to push the Rams' lead to 9-4.
Julio Ibarra then doubled home two more runs to extend the margin to 11-4.
Alex Davis (2-0) pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh inning earning his second win of the season. A 1-2-3 top of the seventh to shut the door on the Bulldogs.
The #23 Texas Wesleyan Rams and Jarvis Christian Bulldogs return to Sycamore Park at 11 am tomorrow for the third and final game of the series.
