WAXAHACHIE, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University softball team (29-11, 15-3 SAC) saw an 11-game win streak snapped after a doubleheader split with Southwestern Assemblies of God (20-18, 11-11 SAC) on Tuesday. The Lady Rams grabbed a 3-0 win in game one before the Lions made a late push to take game two, 3-1.
Â
In game one, the Lady Rams outpaced the Lions by stealing a run in each of the second, third, and sixth innings, while
Makenna Aycock subdued the SAGU hitters in the shutout.
Â
Lauren Wernet doubled to lead-off the second before
Tobi Bonifacio drove in the run to open scoring.Â
Taylor Sutton lifted a high pop fly to left for a sacrifice RBI in the second before
Saeya Esparza put down a bunt on a squeeze play that turned into an RBI base hit for the third run.
Â
Aycock (11-3) picked her sixth straight win from the circle. She went the distance, allowing just two hits in the shutout, walking one, and fanning five batters.
Â
Simply put, game two got away from TXWES. The Lady Rams out hit the Lions 8-4, but had trouble getting across the plate, leaving seven on the base paths.
Â
Even with the struggles to generate runs, the Lady Rams held a 1-0 edge heading into the sixth. The lone run came in the fourth inning on a SAGU error that allowed Terry to score after she singled to lead off the inning.
Â
The Lady Rams committed an error to start the sixth and SAGU took full advantage. The Lions got a RBI double from Casey Waterman before
Sidney Stewart (7-3) got the next two batters out. That should have ended the inning, but due to the error the sixth continued. The six and seven hole hitters in the Lion lineup each delivered RBI doubles to take a 3-1 advantage. All three runs were unearned.
Â
The Lady got the go-ahead run to the plate in the seventh, but SAGU took care of business to secure the upset win.
Â
Stewart suffered the loss. She went 5.2 innings, allowing three runs (none earned) of four hits, walked one, and struck out none.
