Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Fast start rushes Lady Rams past Wildcats

FORT WORTH – The Teas Wesleyan Lady Rams Women's Soccer team needed 2:48. In those few minutes after the whistle blew, Wesleyan asserted themselves as the aggressor and Tameir Grosvenor picked up where she left off from a 23-goal, 2017. Her goal in the 2nd minute was the first of four in a 4-2 victory, giving the Rams their sixth-straight season-opening win.

Grosvenor, assisted by Drea Molina, returned the favor to Molina, delivering her a workable ball on the left side of the net to go up 2-0 in the 15th minute. Grosvenor added a second goal – and Wesleyan's third in the 41st minute (assisted by Cheyenne Moore).

"I really liked our start," said Coach Josh Gibbs. "But I was a little frustrated that we started to coast at 3-0 and let them back in the game. We have to improve on focusing for 90 minutes. Credit to Wiley – they worked very hard and stayed organized. All in all, it's a good win and we'll prepare for a quick turnaround on Tuesday."

It was a scorcher at Martin Field, but a boisterous crowd there to support the Lady Rams helped lift their spirits. Complacency lingered as Wiley made a push – first in the 61st minute on a goal from Mayara Tyszka. After getting outshot 15-4 in the first half - the Wildcats tightened, but still ultimately got outworked, surrendering eight shots to their six.

The Rams kept Wiley goalkeeper Karla Ramirez-Flores busy all day, springing her into action for saves eight times. Grosvenor and Molina each got six good looks at the net and freshman Sasha Trejo came off the bench and provided valuable minutes, getting off four shots including one that dinged off the post.

Lauren Bond got the start in goal for the Rams, saving three shots.

Wesleyan kept its distance in the second half from Wiley, despite showing some exhaust. Cat Smith, off the bench, scored her goal on her only shot in the 77th minute. The Wildcats added one more goal two minutes later. It was the first time Wiley managed to score on Wesleyan in their three out-of-conference battles in the last three years.

RAMBLINGS:

For the third time in her two seasons at Wesleyan, Grosvenor scored at least two goals with at least one assist. The other times she did that were against Jarvis Christian (three goals, one assist) and Mid-America Christian University (two goals, one assist). It's also the third time Molina recorded one goal and one assist: once also against Jarvis Christian in 2016 and then again later that season against Wayland Baptist.
WHAT'S NEXT:

The women travel to Howard Payne Tuesday and then will rest up for Sunday's Martin Field tilt (1 p.m.) against Our Lady of the Lake.
