Another fast start propels Lady Rams to 2-0

BROWNWOOD, TX - Texas Wesleyan is 2-0 for the first time since 2015 after defeating Howard Payne University 3-1 Tuesday afternoon at Citizens National Bank Field.

The Lady Rams out-shot the Yellow Jackets 11-2 in the first half, earning five corner kicks. Tameir Grosvenor was once again Wesleyan's most aggressive attacker. She managed to fire shots in the 2nd, 9th and 15th minutes, but all went wide. It wasn't until the 23rd minute Wesleyan found the break-through.

Cheyenne Moore hit the back of the net on her first shot in the young season, assisted by Grosvenor. Moore had three goals on 23 shots as a junior. Grosvenor picked up an assist in her second-straight game, but like the matchup against the Wiley Wildcats, she wasn't done.

After a yellow card on Howard Payne's Kate Van Wyk, Annie Rocha set up Grosvenor off a free kick, who finally was able to connect to put the Rams up 2-0. Wesleyan had another shot in the 37th minute from Sasha Trejo bang the post.

The second half started off as a frustrating one for the Lady Rams. Wesleyan was whistled for five different fouls in the first 15 minutes of the half, before surrendering a goal in the 62nd minute to HPU's Lesly Garcia, who was able to get around goalkeekper Lauren Bond for the easy put-through.

Things got chippy as HPU inched closer. Garcia fired two more shots a few minutes later against Bond and then the fouls started again for Wesleyan - and so did the cards. Haley Balthrop picked up a yellow in the 69th minute and Drea Molina followed suit two minutes later.

After a Bond save in the 89th minute that would have tied the game, a freshman delivered. Trejo, who fired four shots in her debut against Wiley, found the back of the net (assisted by Taylor Ross) to put the game away.

Wesleyan finished with 20 shots, 12 on goal. Grosvenor connected on target five times. Lauren Bond registered four saves while Christy Zwart nabbed two. The Lady Ram defense held the Yellow Jackets to just 12 shots (just six produced by the starters, seven total on goal).

RAMBLINGS:

Trejo notched her first collegiate goal today.

The Lady Rams were called for 17 fouls in the match, the most fouls in a game since they were called for 18 against Northwood on September 27, 2013.

WHAT'S NEXT:

The undefeated Rams host Our Lady of the Lake University Sunday September 2, 1 p.m. at Martin Field. The two sides met in San Antonio in 2016, with the Saints getting the better of Wesleyan, 1-0.
