Saints storm back to upend Rams

FORT WORTH - A powerful start ended in a thump Sunday afternoon at Martin Field for the Lady Rams, surrendering four straight goals in a 4-2 loss to Our Lady of the Lake University.

Things looked so promising for Texas Wesleyan (3-1) early on. Sasha Trejo was fed in the box by Tameir Grosvenor in the fifth minute and connected, putting Wesleyan up 1-0. 15 minutes later, Grosvenor connected for her fourth goal of the season off a blocked shot that wasn't kept.

Sunday was an important measuring stick for the Lady Rams after OLLU (2-0) managed to dismantle the Sooner Athletic Conference's Oklahoma City Stars 5-2 in their previous game. Through the first 20 minutes, Wesleyan was certainly passing the eye-test. In the 34th minute, the game turned on its head.

Our Lady of the Lake was awarded a penalty kick for a foul in the box, awarded by the head referee. When Rams head coach Josh Gibbs asked who the penalty was on, the head referee shouted to the bench, 'I didn't see who it was on'. Dawson Brinkley took and scored the penalty - a shot drilled center after Lauren Bond for an instant guessed right-side.

The goal gave the Saints plenty of life and Wesleyan struggled to respond. The next shot for the Rams didn't come until the 50th minute (Grosvenor) after OLLU had already managed to tie the game in the 49th on a strike from Yolanda Vazquez at the top of the box.

Things continued to spiral out of control after Brinkley put OLLU in command seven minutes later. Wesleyan had a chance to tie the game after Grosvenor was fouled in the box and the Lady Rams were awarded a penalty shot of their own, but Haley Balthrop's attempt soared too high.

Brinkley smelled blood in the water, assisting Vazquez on her second goal in the 59th minute just 1:41 after the penalty kick miss. Shots from Katie Baugh, Grosvenor, Taylor Ross and Cat Smith all were on target after the Rams dug a 4-2 hole, forcing OLLU goalkeeper Mikaela Gilbert to work, but not much showed promise. Baugh's had the most life (65th minute) as the wind carried it into the upper right-hand corner from 35 yards out, punched away.
