Lady Rams rock to pair of straight set wins

TXWES out-blocked their opponents 16.5 - 7.0

FORT WORTH – The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team picked up a pair of straight set wins over conference newcomer Langston University (1-2, 0-2 SAC) and in-state rival (RV) Our Lady of the Lake University (2-5) at the Sid Richardson Center on Saturday.

The Lady Rams made a quick rebound, stringing three consecutive straight set wins since dropping a match to #17 Georgetown College just one day ago.

Texas Wesleyan absolutely dominated at the net today, posting eight blocks in each match.

In the game against Langston, Tierra Coverson led the way with nine kills and four blocks. TXWES went on a 12-1 rally in set one, capped on a Coverson smash over the middle to take a commanding 21-8 advantage. The Lions could only muster four more points in the set.

The second set saw more of the same, with the team racing to a 12-point advantage before bursting to a 25-12 win after Brittany Mohle laced a kill past the defense.

Dana Lohrke blasted three kills to lead the team in the third set, as the Lady Rams held their opponent to just eight points in the straight set win.

Lohrke topped out at eight kills and four block assists, hitting .500 in the conference win.

In the game against the Saints, a fast start was key for the Rams to capture a momentum they would ride the entire match. The team exploded out to an 8-0 lead in the first set, a run that included three kills from Jasmine Creek. The Lady Rams used a 7-0 rally to set up enough room to absorb a 6-1 OLLU run. Paige Wallace ended the set with a pop for a point to give the Rams a 25-15 win.

The Saints reset and got their feet under them in the second set, holding a 6-point lead at 20-14. The Rams rushed back, outscoring the Saints 15-7 the rest of the way to take a 29-27 win. Hannah Altman put down an ace for game point.

Texas Wesleyan maintained control the entire third set, as the Saints could not find a foothold. OLLU stayed within striking distance, but TXWES took care of business, 25-21.

Coverson led the Rams with 12 kills and 4.5 blocks, including three solo blocks. Brittni Mohle added 10 kills. Brenda Pargas notched a double-double behind 18 assists and 22 digs. Brianna Sitton also hit double-double status with 12 assists and 17 digs.

Texas Wesleyan will hit the road and take on Wayland Baptist in Plainview, Texas on Friday, September 7. The match is set for a 7:00 p.m. start.
