Texas Wesleyan sweeps Wayland as conference play resumes

PLAINVIEW, TX - Texas Wesleyan volleyball (6-4, 3-0) moved to 3-0 in Sooner Athletic Conference play - now nine straight conference set wins to start the season - with a 25-18, 25-18, 25-7 triumph over Wayland Baptist (3-5, 3-1 SAC) Friday night.

The Pioneers were previously an unbeaten 3-0 against SAC competition.

Hannah Altman's double-double highlighted a quick night for Texas Wesleyan - 17 digs and 10 assists. Dana Lohrke led the attack with 10 kills, while Brenda Pargas (12 digs), Brittni Mohle (12 digs) and Brianna Sitton (10 digs) led a strong defensive charge.

The Lady Rams stepped on the Pioneers in Set 3, getting 13 kills to just one attacking error (.480 hit percentage). Up 8-3, Texas Wesleyan went on a 13-1 run, including three of Lohrke and Mohle's spikes. This, coming after a second set that got away from Wayland Baptist - on their errors.

In a tied-at-13 Set 2, Wayland Baptist committed attacking errors four different times that stretched the Texas Wesleyan lead to 20-14. The Rams also got an ace from Sitton, one of 10 aces on the night. Pargas had three aces and Sunny Clark contributed three as well, all in the first set to help extend the Lady Rams' lead from 10-7 to 13-7. Pargas' ace sealed the set.

Through 10 games this season, Lohrke leads the team with 77 kills, Brenda Pargas has collected 160 assists, Altman leads the aces category with 13, Sitton has fully established herself as the team's top defender with 189 digs and Tierra Coverson is up to 36 blocks.

Texas Wesleyan, Oklahoma City and Southwest Assemblies of God are now the lone unbeatens in the SAC's early-season stretch.

RAMBLINGS:
Wesleyan has won four in a row, after starting a brutal 2018 schedule 2-4. Three different times in 2017, the Lady Rams strung together three different streaks of six wins or more. In all of those streaks, Wesleyan won four straight-set sweeps, tapping out at five from September 15-29.

WHAT'S NEXT:
Texas Wesleyan hopes to stay hot tomorrow on the road at Oklahoma Panhandle State at 1 p.m. The team returns home next weekend for a conference double dip with Southwestern Christian Friday night and Oklahoma City Saturday afternoon.
