Rams struggle to find offense in loss to Saints

FORT WORTH - Texas Wesleyan (2-2) managed just three shots and lost Jahvain Russell to a red card in the 60th minute of a 3-0 loss to Our Lady of the Lake University (3-0) Sunday afternoon at Martin Field.

The Rams couldn't find any serious opportunities in goal and their frustrations boiled over when Russell was ejected. Wesleyan was called for 16 fouls to OLLU's 11 and despite the ramped-up intensity in the second half, the men never had a strong look at a goal.

Their best chance came in the 46th minute from Russell's head off of Keagan da Silva's corner - saved by Saints goalkeeper Jorge Cavazos, who had a relaxing afternoon backed by the Saints stout backline. In four games, OLLU has surrendered just two goals, one to Sooner Athletic Conference foe Oklahoma City.

Jermaine Morris had a shot sail high in the 56th minute and Zion Balogun took a shot long and wide in the 86th. The Saints scored in the 36th minute to take the lead and extended that lead with two goals after Russell's exit - both by Jesus Cortes (64th and 82nd minute).

Wesleyan's defense kept them in the game, including some stellar play from Russell. The Rams were without attacker Claudio Barraza - the team's leader in goals scored on the young season with four - serving a red card he received at Paul Quinn Friday afternoon, the Rams first loss of the season after starting 2-0.

RAMBLINGS:

After getting shutout five times during the 2015 and 2016 seasons, Wesleyan cut that number down to three in 2017. Sunday's tilt with the Saints was the first time the Rams have been shutout in 2018. Three shots for the Rams was the lowest shot total in a game since three against Texas at Brownsville September 12, 2014.

WHAT'S NEXT:

Texas Wesleyan aims to bounce back Wednesday night against Texas College. The Steers are 1-0 after beating Ram rival Southwestern Assemblies of God 3-1 on August 30.
