Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Cameron Irvine

Texas Wesleyan triumphs in double overtime thriller

FORT WORTH - In a heated second half between two teams who clearly saw the importance in this Sooner Athletic Conference match, Texas Wesleyan University Women's Soccer (6-3, 1-1 SAC) wanted it more - a 2-1, double-overtime thriller over Central Christian College (6-4, 1-1 SAC) that ended emphatically with Tameir Grosvenor's 12 goal of the season in the 112th minute, avoiding the Lady Rams first tie since October 18, 2016. Drea Molina provided the critical assist.

Central Christian struck first with Alyssa Emery's run in the 55th minute, but the Lady Rams would find their footing soon enough. In the 58th minute, Cheyenne Moore delivered a wicked ball off the right side, curving it all the way inside the left post for the tying goal. This, coming off of a Grosvenor pass that sailed wide of the six-yard box, but found some space in behind. It was Moore's second goal, and fourth assist of 2018. In every game Grosvenor has assisted on a goal, she's had a shot reach the back of the net herself.

It appeared Grosvenor had the shot for the ages in the 39th minute that would have put the Lady Rams ahead. From about 25-yards out, Grosvenor nearly got a high kick to dip just underneath, but banged against the crossbar and away from significant danger for the Tigers. Despite this opportunity and the one she eventually was able to put in, Central Christian made it a point-of-emphasis to crowd Grosvenor and force her out of the 18-yard box, sometimes bringing a second or third defender to force a deeper-than-desired look at goal, a pass or a change of possession. Grosvenor, who led the conference in goals, shots and shots on goal heading into Saturday, finished with seven shots.

Central Christian made some serious threats late in an attempt to send Texas Wesleyan to a shocking second-straight conference loss, something that still hasn't happened since 2015. The Tigers, who got 21 women on the field to keep fresh legs, had two late corner kicks that could have done damage and forced two saves out of Lauren Bond after the Lady Rams earned the tying goal. In the first overtime, Bond needed to come to the rescue three times in less than three minutes. Four different corner kicks in the first overtime for Texas Wesleyan failed to produce.

Goalkeeper Christy Zwart pitched a first-half shutout. In her last five games (playing roughly three full games), Zwart has given up just one goal, collecting 10 saves. Team captains Hailey Balthrop and Amber Leachman steadied the troops defensively and Katelynn Teufel and Katie Baugh provided valuable minutes and timely stops.

RAMBLINGS
  • Six of the last seven games that have ended 2-1, the Lady Rams have won

WHAT'S NEXT
The Oklahoma City Stars come to Martin Field Tuesday at 5 p.m. Despite not winning the regular-season conference standings in the last three seasons, the Stars have finished with an above .500 conference record - just like the Lady Rams.
