Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Cameron Irvine

Lady Rams put together complete performance, dominate Lions

FORT WORTH – Texas Wesleyan Women's Basketball (8-9, 6-3 SAC) showed next-level potential in a complete game Saturday afternoon at the Sid Richardson Center, a 77-48 victory over the Langston Lions (7-9, 2-6 SAC). The triumph improved the Lady Rams to 6-1 at home this season, their second-best start at home in the last six years.

The biggest takeaway from Saturday: Bailey Broadnax returning to form. With teammates from previous seasons marveling in her recovery from an injury that has kept her from 100 percent health for over a year, Broadnax went on to score 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting in a season-high 24 minutes, including a signature step through the lane and finish with the left hand in the third quarter.

During a timeout after the lay-in, Head Coach Steve Trachier gave Broadnax a hug in the huddle, signifying what all Lady Rams fans were thinking in the building: thank goodness Broadnax is returning to form – and just at the right time. Broadnax had played just 42 minutes all season prior to Saturday.

Elsewhere, Nicole Gleason found her shooting touch, hitting 5-of-10 from downtown, 6-of-12 all together to score 17 points, her highest total since December 8. She also hauled in nine rebounds, tying a season high – with two blocks, now five in the last two games.

Evie Whorley hit on 6-of-8 shots for 17 points too, chipping in four rebounds and three assists.

Lexi Burns missed her first five shots leading the team in assists in the meantime with six, only to hit her last four – all from deep – to be the fourth TXWES player in double figures (12 points). Burns also had a season-high five steals, giving her 29 on the year. She's upped her percentage from long-range, a 34.1 percent shooter as a senior.

Chrystal Ngawuchu was crucial in the early moments of the first quarter, as her size mis-match and the team's ability to find her early in the shot clock contributed to a fast start. Ngawuchu scored her first bucket with 9:11 to go in the first frame, then assisted on the squad's next basket – a Whorley three – to put the Lady Rams up 5-2. Ngawuchu scored the next bucket (7-5).

Up 16-10, TXWES scored seven in a row to take a 13-point lead. Up 29-18 with 5:37 to go in the second stanza, the Lady Rams pitched a shutout for the rest of the half, scoring the halfs final 11 points. Langston was the fourth opponent the Rams have held under 50 this season, the third in conference.

Texas Wesleyan won all the intangible stats, including points off turnovers (21-14), points in the paint (36-24), bench points (20-17) and second chance points (13-8). The 11 threes tied a season high, this all coming without Kyla Grant who did not play Saturday after three-consecutive outings with 16 or more points.

OUTLOOK
With Tomi Sanchez and Broadnax getting healthier, the Lady Rams have a legit ten-player rotation they can call upon as they gun for big postseason aspirations. TXWES is one win away from tying last season's win total with 13 regular season games to go.

CONFERENCE UPDATE
John Brown got the victory Saturday, meaning that Texas Wesleyan will stay in fourth place in the conference standings for now, but is now firmly and unopposed in fourth with Southwest Assemblies of God a game back.
