FORT WORTH, TX - Texas Wesleyan Volleyball (15-6, 10-2 SAC) is in mid-season form, crushing Langston (4-16, 2-8 SAC) 25-8, 25-19 and 25-15 Saturday afternoon. After a short intermission from TXWES dominance, the Lady Rams returned to the floor to sweep the University of Southwest (5-18) 25-20, 25-15, 25-16.
Chastiny Brown dominated the Lions.
Arianna Alvarado handled the Mustangs.
Brown had 14 kills against the Lions, tying a season high she achieved in back-to-back games to start 2019. Six kills came in the second set, Langston's strongest effort on the other side but all day the Lions had no answers for Brown.
Brenda Pargas was a big part of the offensive success - nine of her 20 assists in the game were to Brown, with
Morgan Burns getting four of her 14 to number one.
The 25-8 set one victory was the second-straight dominant start to a match (holding lesser opponents under 10 points), showing the focus the Lady Rams have been playing with as of late. The strong start came with .444 hitting percentage and five aces, including four from
Ashley Curry. Curry finished the match with six (a career high), the most aces by a single player in a match since
Hannah Altman had six September 1, 2018 at home against Langston of all teams. The Rams as a team turned in 11 aces against the hapless Lions.
Brown also finished with seven blocks, tying her career high that she had against McPherson last season.
Madison Lopez led the defense with 12 digs.
Then, it was Alvarado's turn. Against Southwest, the freshman accounted for 16 kills, giving her at least 10 kills in five of her last nine games. She came out smokin, getting four of the Lady Rams' first nine points and seven of her kills in set one. Her distinct advantage had TXWES feeding her opportunities - 31 to be exact. The next most active hitter had 16 chances at the net.
Alvarado's 16 kills match the 16 freshman
Sydney Charlton earned against Wayland Baptist September 27. The pair are the first freshman to have at least 16 kills in a match since
Shelby Stinnett had five matches with at least 16 kills (season high of 20) in 2014.
During this set winning streak, the Lady Rams have hit at least .200 in 18 of the last 19 appearances.
The program has now won 15 matches in 11 consecutive seasons, matching the longest stretch of dominance in Lady Rams history, an 11-season run from 1980-1990 of at least 15 victories.
Texas Wesleyan will finally be tested Friday October 18 when John Brown comes to town. The Eagles handed the Rams one of their two conference losses earlier this season, but have lost the last four meetings played at the Sid Richardson Center.
