FORT WORTH - Texas Wesleyan Volleyball (19-7, 14-3 SAC) took control of second place with their win over Southwestern Assemblies of God on Tuesday and continued their dominance at home Friday night with a straight sets (25-13, 25-11, 25-16) victory over Oklahoma Panhandle State (9-16, 6-11 SAC), the seventh straight opponent TXWES has beaten at home, victorious in its last 21 sets at the Sid Richardson Center.
Freshman hitter
Arianna Alvarado led the way with 14 kills, her fifth consecutive game with double digit successful attacks - she dominated sets one and two with 11 of those kills coming in the first 50 points of the match. Senior hitter
Chastiny Brown finished the Aggies off. Brown had eight of her 13 kills in Set 3, hitting .409 for the day. Alvarado hit .522.
Morgan Burns had a season high four service aces to lead Texas Wesleyan's 8-0 edge in the serve game.
Brenda Pargas (19 assists) and Burns (16 assists) split duties as the primary setters while libero
Madison Lopez once again led all defenders with 10 digs.
Brittni Mohle did, however, turn in eight digs - a season best.
TXWES hit at least .333 in every set, including a blistering .500 (12 kills, two errors) in the second game - the Lady Rams totaled a .376 hitting percentage in total.
The match was decided by dominant runs that helped Texas Wesleyan pull away. Oklahoma Panhandle State found plenty of opportunities to show off skills, just not enough of them. In the first set, with TXWES up 5-4, the Rams went on a 7-1 run, prompting a timeout. The Aggies were never the same, never closing the gap to less than seven.
In the next set, the Lady Rams led 7-6 and went on another 5-0 stretch. After the Aggies closed the gap to four, 13-9, Texas Wesleyan scored the next six, capped by a Mohle service ace.
With Panhandle State desperate to stay alive, the Aggies were playing their best volleyball of the night in Set 3 and even held a one-point lead, 12-11. A barrage of attacks came the Aggies way next, with Alvarado, Brown, Mohle and
McKayla Flowers all coming up with kills to push the Rams advantage to 19-14. TXWES scored the last six of the evening.
Kendra Butler - OPSU's top hitter on the season - found success, hitting .444, but only had nine attacks (fifth on the team) and contributed just four kills.
Texas Wesleyan will celebrate Senior Day Saturday when Wayland Baptist comes to Fort Worth but it probably won't be the last time TXWESÂ will have the home court advantage. The Lady Rams are in position to host a first-round SAC Tournament Postseason game on Tuesday November 12 against either Wayland Baptist, Panhandle State or Southwestern Christian.
