Angelo State edges TXWES in exhibition

SAN ANGELO, TX - Texas Wesleyan Women's Basketball (2-1) held their own at Division II Angelo State Tuesday night, but ultimately the Lady Rams were defeated by the Belles 78-68.

Destiney Winkfield led the way with 14 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Nicole Gleason chipped in 10 points, four rebounds and two steals.

Makayla Coy contributed 11 points off the bench with five rebounds in just 15 minutes. The Lady Rams kept the turnovers down in the loss - 11 in total, just four in the second half - but the Belles spent the whole night at the foul line, hitting 30-of-37 free throws.

Texas Wesleyan started in a 6-0 hole, but erased it quickly with a 9-2 run, thanks to a couple of threes - one from Winkfield and another from Evie Whorley. That was the last advantage TXWES possessed. Angelo State went on a 7-0 run to take a 15-9 lead with 1:26 to go in the first quarter. Texas Wesleyan fought back to trim the deficit to one score multiple times in the second frame but never could quite get the lead back.

A 7-2 run to start the second half once again cut the deficit to three, but ASU scored the next six. it was just the fourth meeting between the two teams all-time and the second this decade. The last came on December 2, 2015 - a 25-point loss for the Rams of Texas Wesleyan. Tuesday night's 10 point defeat - a marked improvement. Angelo State finished 26-6 last season, qualifying for the DII South Central Regional, advancing to the third round.

The Lady Rams will face another Division II squad - Midwestern State - Saturday November 16 in Wichita Falls. TXWES beat the Mustangs last season 58-54, the first victory in five tries (one each the last five years, all at Midwestern State).
