WICHITA FALLS, TX - Texas Wesleyan Women's Basketball (2-1) dropped a 75-68 exhibition on the road Saturday afternoon at Midwestern State despite Destiny Winkfield's 26 points and five steals on 12-of-20 shooting.
Makayla Coy got her first start of the season and earned the game's first bucket. Winkfield got the next bucket; in fact, she got the next five. Winkfield scored 10 in a row to give the Lady Rams a 12-9 lead, an advantage they carried into the second frame.
TXWES' largest lead came with 6:49 to go in the first half on
Alexus Brigham's jumper for a 25-20 advantage and didn't give it up until the final minute of the first half on a pair of free throws. From there, Midwestern State held serve until
Nicole Gleason nailed a trey with 4:54 remaining in the third, putting the Lady Rams back ahead 43-42. The Mustangs responded with a 12-2 run to close out the third, a hole too deep to climb out of for the visitors.
Brigham scored 19 off the bench in 30 minutes, hitting 50 percent of her shots. Gleason added 10 points and five steals. Gleason's and Winkfield's five takeaways were 10 of 20 passes stolen by TXWES in the game - helping to force 28 total turnovers by the Mustangs. The 22-13 advantage in points off turnovers for Texas Wesleyan was a key factor in keeping the Rams in the ball game.
Chrystal Ngawuchu snarled 10 rebounds and
Hailee Walls hit all four of her free throws, four of seven made in the contest for TXWES. The Rams did out-score MSU in the fourth 23-21, but got doubled up on the boards throughout, 54-27.
After back-to-back narrow exhibition losses to DII programs, Texas Wesleyan will return to the friendly confines of the Sid Richardson Center Tuesday night to face Huston-Tillotson at 7 p.m. The Rams haven't faced the Rams from Huston-Tillotson since December 1, 2012, but have won the previous five matchups this decade. Tillotson went 16-11 last season and plays in the NAIA's Red River Athletic Conference. HTU enters the battle 3-1 after a 71-59 loss on the road at DII St. Edwards, Saturday.Â
