Texas Wesleyan busted on to the scene in quarter three sprinting on 15-0 rally to take a dominating 21-point lead at 55-34. The Patriots chipped at the lead, but it took well into the fourth quarter just to make it an 8-point game at 73-65 with 2:48 remaining in the contest. TXWES held the opponent at arm's length the rest of the way for a 79-67 opening day win.
Four players ended in double digits in scoring. Destiny Winkfield led the team with 17, adding four assists. Gleason had 13 and was 4 of 6 from downtown. The senior from Heath, Texas also led the team with eight rebounds.
Alexus Brigham tallied 13 point and six boards, while Hailey Walls notched 12 points in the win.
TXWES shot a paltry 45 percent from the field, gashing the ABU defense often. The Patriots shot 37 percent from the floor and were out-rebounded, 44-32.
The Lady Rams will take the short drive to Waxahachie, Texas to take part in the SAGU Classic. TXWES will take on LSU-Shreveport in neutral territory on Friday, Nov. 8. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
