Lady Rams drop first game of SAGU Classic to Pilots

WAXAHACHIE, TX - Texas Wesleyan Women's Basketball (1-1) couldn't keep their fourth quarter lead down the stretch in a 77-72 loss to LSU-Shreveport (2-0) Friday night in the first game of this season's SAGU Classic, a tournament that has been a staple on the Lady Rams schedule since the 2013-2014 season.

Destiney Winkfield followed up her 17-point debut Tuesday against Arlington Baptist with 20 points Friday against the Pilots. Winkfield nailed three of the team's six makes from long range and led the squad in assists with five. Jordan Brightwell added 14 points and four boards on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor, while Hailee Walls chipped in 14 off the bench, her second double-digit scoring game of the young season.

Alexus Brigham was one of four players to grab four rebounds and hit all four of her shots from the floor (nine points) but TXWES couldn't keep LSU-Shreveport's Sabrina Banks off the boards. Banks hauled in 14 of LSU-Shreveport's 36 rebounds in the game, including six on the offensive glass.

Texas Wesleyan scored 25 points in the second quarter, the third time in the first two games the Lady Rams have scored at least 25 points, showing their explosivity on the offensive end.

Tied at 20 in the second quarter, TXWES went on an 11-2 run capped by a Walls three-pointer. The run erased an early six point deficit from the first frame but didn't hold. In a back-and-forth affair, the Lady Rams re-gained the lead off of Winkfield's three (64-63) with 6:17 to play in the fourth but surrendered the next six points and never took back the advantage.

It was the third-straight year the Rams and Pilots have squared off in the SAGU Classic and the fifth time in the last nine years overall. LSU-Shreveport has won four consecutive games in the series by ten points or less.

Paul Quinn is next on Texas Wesleyan's schedule - the two will tip-off at 5 p.m. Saturday in Waxahachie. The Red River Athletic Conference foe is 2-1 to start the year, but lost by 20 Friday, 89-69, to fellow Sooner Athletic Conference opponent John Brown at the Classic. The Lady Rams have won all four meetings against Paul Quinn this decade, twice holding the Tigers to under 40 points, including last season's 56-36 drumming.
