TXWES, Gleason all smiles after win caps SAGU Classic

WAXAHACHIE, TX - Nicole Gleason lit up the Paul Quinn Tigers (2-2) with seven threes Saturday afternoon at the SAGU Classic, helping Texas Wesleyan Women's Basketball (2-1) to a 71-58 victory.

Gleason totaled 21 points total hitting 7-of-15 beyond the arc, tying a career high seven made threes she first accomplished against Wayland Baptist her sophomore season November 30, 2017. The senior also came down with a career-high 11 rebounds, 10 on the defensive glass. Gleason added three blocks, two steals and two assists to her stat line as well.

The sharp-shooter did most of her damage in the third quarter. She hit on three consecutive deep shots, turning what was once just a four point, 31-27 advantage into a 20-point rout, 55-35. Destiney Winkfield had six of her 16 points during that same stretch. Gleason started the fourth quarter hitting back-to-back threes in less than 30 seconds, which helped the Rams to a 25-point, 66-41 beat down.

A big reason for TXWES' dominance was the work on the boards by the team as a whole, not just Gleason. The Lady Rams out-rebounded Paul Quinn 49-31, including a 17-11 edge on the offensive glass. Chrystal Ngawuchu had a career high 16 points to go with her eight boards (three offensive) - she did all of that in just 21 minutes of work. Jordan Brightwell and Winkfield each had six rebounds, four apiece on their own end. Winkfield collected nine of the team's 15 assists on 29 made baskets.

Paul Quinn did not have an outside game either, nailing just 1-of-12 from beyond the arc.

For the third consecutive game, Texas Wesleyan had its slow moments offensively, but erupted for 29 third-quarter points, the fourth quarter already this season with at least 25 points accounted for. All of last season, the Lady Rams offense produced seven such 10-minute stretches.

A couple of exhibitions await TXWES before returning home November 19 to face Huston Tillotson in a battle of the Rams bout. The Lady Rams will be at Division II Angelo State in another battle of the Rams November 12 and will wrap up the mini road trip at Division II Midwestern State in Wichita Falls Saturday November 16.
