Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Cameron Irvine

Grosvenor's record 75th goal helps Lady Rams top Pioneers

FORT WORTH, TX - Texas Wesleyan Women's Soccer (12-5, 7-2 SAC) celebrated Senior Day Tuesday night on a rainy, misty, foggy evening at Martin Field with a 2-1 victory over Wayland Baptist (6-6-2, 3-5-1 SAC) and while junior forward Tameir Grosvenor didn't take anything away from the seniors' celebrations, she did have her moment under the lights. With 28 seconds to go before the end of the first half, Grosvenor found the back of the net and scored her 75th career goal, breaking Jessica Carrion's record that has stood for 16 years.

"I was happy," Grosvenor said. "I knew that my mom was proud. I play to make my parents proud and (Coach Gibbs proud). I knew they knew that I could do it so I went out and did it. I'm happier we won more than I broke the record."

The goal helped give the Lady Rams the lead, but Kristen Carter's nudge off a bouncing ball in the box quickly turned Texas Wesleyan's fears of another overtime struggle into elation in securing the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament, which begins Saturday night with Texas Wesleyan hosting No. 6 Southwestern Christian (6-8-1, 4-4-1 SAC) 7 p.m. at Martin Field. The Lady Rams topped the Eagles 5-2 earlier this season, but SCU has been playing better ball as of late, including a tie against No. 2 John Brown and a 4-1 win over the Pioneers.

Carter scored in the 85th minute, just 50 seconds after Wayland Baptist tied the game at one. Lindsey Beckrich placed an opportunistic ball in the box that deflected off of Grosvenor's shoulder. In a crowd, Wayland goalkeeper Jessie Rivera couldn't find the sphere and eventually saw it coming off Carter's foot, but it was too late. Carter assisted Grosvenor's goal in the first half.

The match featured a flurry of activity including 41 shots, 19 saves - including 12 from senior goalkeeper Christy Zwart, her second-consecutive game with double-digit saves - and a colorful exchange between the head referee and a fan who complained one to many times about a call or lackthereof. That's the beauty of sports - every game is different and sometimes something that happens once will never happen again. Like in the 32nd minute, when Grosvenor thought she had her record-setting goal bounce off the crossbar after the ball miraculously fell to her foot following Savannah Barron's run at goalkeeper Jessie Rivera, causing the ball to ricochet backwards.

Of the 41 shots, 22 were placed on goal but many of Wayland Baptist's shots came from outside the 18-yard box and were easier for Zwart to handle, despite the slippery conditions. Seniors Katelynn Teufel and Taylor Ross were once again essential - each one of them has played at least 90 minutes in the last six games.

Grosvenor now needs one goal to break the single-season program record of 29, also held by Carrion. Grosvenor left the field with 29 Tuesday night.
