Lady Rams rout Eagles, advance to SAC semis

FORT WORTH, TX - Texas Wesleyan Women's Soccer (13-5) not only got a 4-0 win over Southwestern Christian (6-9-1) in the SAC Quarterfinals Saturday night, but also got a stunning upset that helps the Lady Rams' chances down the stretch.

The No. 2 seed in the tournament and the 10th ranked team in the country according to the most recent NAIA Coaches' Poll, John Brown, lost to No. 6 Wayland Baptist in penalty kicks 4-2 after a 1-1 draw in 110 minutes of action, going final just moments before the end of the first half of TXWES-SCU. The victory for Wayland was so improbable, it had literally never happened before in any setting - heading into the match, the Pioneers were 0-15-3 against the Golden Eagles all-time.

Wayland's upset means its journey will continue in Fort Worth and the Lady Rams will not have to go on the road in the semifinals but instead will get to host another playoff game Tuesday (time to be determined). Texas Wesleyan just defeated Wayland Baptist on senior Day 2-1 last week, but the Pioneers did defeat JBU, after all.

At Martin Field, Texas Wesleyan dominated the first half and never looked back. It all started when Savanna Barron attempted to get a pass into scoring position but instead curled the lofting ball inside the goal and into the net across the way. Lindsey Beckrich gave her the pass that allowed the stunning goal to happen from about 35 yards away.

That was in the eighth minute. Two minutes later, the Lady Rams struck again. Thanks to tremendous passing and ball movement, SCU's defense got all sorts of turned around and left Taylor Ross opened, concerned with Tameir Grosvenor who knocked it back to Ross for a 2-0 lead.

Grosvenor scored in the 26th minute, assisted by Kristen Carter, for her 30th goal of the season, a new program record. Carter then got on the board in the 35th minute as the onslaught continued. TXWES scored four goals on just 11 first half shots, playing its most efficient half to date.

In the second half, Texas Wesleyan worked on their defense in the half-field, allowing nine shots but maintaining a shutout, the team's first since October 4. Goalkeeper Christy Zwart punched away the only real threat posed in the second half with 20 minutes left, lifting herself up to swat the shot over the crossbar.

It will be the second consecutive year the Lady Rams will host a SAC Semifinal. The 2018 SAC Regular Season Champions will continue to seek their first SAC Tournament title in school history and the program's first NAIA Tournament appearance since 2008. The forecast? 36 degrees, with clear skies and mostly calm winds.
