Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Cameron Irvine

MBB loses double overtime thriller

SAN ANTONIO, TX - In what can only be described as an anomaly, Texas Wesleyan Men's Basketball (8-3) dropped a game on the road to Our Lady of the Lake (4-9) in double overtime 138-127 Tuesday night in San Antonio. The two squads scored 107 each in regulation before playing another ten minutes to decide a winner.

The game breaks a program record for most combined points scored in a game (265) topping a record that had been on the books for more than 40 years, a 108-152 loss to the University of Houston during the 1965-66 season. The 49 free throws attempted was just two shy of a record 51 from back in 1991.

David Shepard hit a game-tying three at the buzzer to force the first overtime, three of his season-high 11 points off the bench. OLLU's David Embry hit a bucket with 26 seconds left to force a second overtime, tied at 118 - neither team got off another shot. The Saints scored 20 points in the next five minutes, hitting all four of their shots (two threes) and 10-of-13 free throws. The first time these two teams played this season on November 9 in Fort Worth, the Rams won 80-68.

TXWES shot 56.6 percent from the floor. OLLU made 57.1 percent of its shots. The Rams hit 35 free throws, including 20-of-26 in the second half, part of a foul-fest (62 fouls in 50 minutes or one per every 48 seconds).

Texas Wesleyan was battling back all night after surrendering the game's first 10 points and trailing 20-7 with 14:49 to go in the first half. After back-and-forth action, TXWES again fell behind by 12 on a Estefan Trevino basket for the Saints put Our Lady of the Lake in front by 12, 45-33. Down ten at the half, momentum finally swung the Rams' way with three points by Akeem White and a trey from Sam Lorenzen in the first minute of the second half cut the deficit to four, 61-57.

TXWES gave chase before finally catching OLLU with 13:44 to play in regulation on another critical basket from Shepard, giving the Rams a 75-73 advantage. The lead would get as high as six before the two jostled for position in the final seven minutes, ultimately going to OT.

Six players scored in double figures, led by Akeem White's 24 points on 8-for-11 shooting. Peyton Sallee chipped in a season-high 19 points and six rebounds off the bench in 43 minutes with the starters all in foul trouble. Lorenzen played just 11 minutes (four fouls), while Sebastian Karwoski (fouled out in 18 minutes) and Davon Berry (fouled out, 35 minutes) eventually bowed out. Sallee committed just three personal fouls in those 43 minutes.

LaMont Simmons fouled out in 19 minutes, but did his damage while he could to the tune of 15 points, five boards and three assists while hitting 7-of-11 from the floor. Joe Cook-Green had 17 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals, Berry scored 13 points (hitting all six of his free throws) and of course, Shepard's 11. Despite all the scoring, the Rams hit a season-low six three-pointers, taking a season-low 15.

With the home game against Huston-Tillotson on December 20 canceled, Texas Wesleyan will stew the loss for a couple of weeks before returning to Sooner Athletic Conference break after the holidays against Oklahoma Panhandle State on January 2. The Aggies will face the wrath of a hungry TXWES bunch which beat OPSU in overtime 82-77 at the Sid Richardson Center last season in the finale. The Rams scored 112 points in regulation of a 41-point rout at the Sid the season before.
