Lady Rams rout previously unbeaten Johnson & Wales

NORTH MIAMI, FL - Texas Wesleyan Women's Basketball (7-2) completed its trip to Florida with a pair of wins after strolling past Johnson & Wales (8-1) 88-68.

Not only was it the most lopsided victory of the season for TXWES and the most points the Rams have scored, but the victory improves Texas Wesleyan to seven wins through its first nine games for the first time since the 2012-13 campaign. Johnson & Wales lost control of the game in the second quarter when the Lady Rams launched 32 points on the scoreboard thanks in part to 5-of-5 shooting from downtown. TXWES hit 12 threes in the game, the most this season and the most since February 16, including seven in the second half after the squad missed its first six from deep.

The Lady Rams had assists on 22 of their 34 made shots and just 13 turnovers - Jordan Brightwell and Alexus Brigham each had four assists and no turnovers in a combined 50 minutes of work.

Nicole Gleason and Destiney Winkfield each scored 17 to lead the offense - Winkfield added seven assists and three boards, while Gleason chipped in two rebounds, two assists, a block and three steals. Gleason hit 5-of-10 from deep, while Winkfield was 3-of-6. Evie Whorley contributed season highs in points (14), minutes (37) and three-pointers made (4). Brigham had 16 off the bench on 7-of-12 shooting.

Cristina Balderrama got a season high 14 minutes and turned the opportunity into 10 points, five rebounds and a steal, earning three different trips to the line. The sophomore's emergence could be a key depth-builder to the bench as conference play ramps up and competition becomes more fierce.

After Johnson & Wales chipped into the lead in the third quarter, Texas Wesleyan erupted again for 25 fourth-quarter points. to run away with the victory. It's the most lopsided victory on the road out-of-conference for the Lady Rams since a 73-45 victory December 12, 2016 at ... Johnson & Wales.

Texas Wesleyan will have a tough tilt with Division I's UTSA Roadrunners Friday December 20 in San Antonio before taking a break for the holidays, returning to Sooner Athletic Conference play on January 2 at the Sid Richardson Center against Oklahoma Panhandle State. UTSA is 3-6 so far this season.
