MCPHERSON, KS - Led by
Lexi Burns' season-high 31 points, Texas Wesleyan (13-15, 11-9 SAC) outscored Central Christian (2-25, 1-19 SAC) 29-9 in the fourth quarter to land a 101-84 victory in the conference, TXWES' second in a row.
Burns abolished her previous season high of 25 hitting 7-of-11 threes and all three of her looks inside the arc. She nailed all four of her free throws on a day the Lady Rams converted 20-of-22 from the line. With 11 points 26 minutes in, Burns went off in the final four minutes of the third and in the fourth.
Burns hit a bucket with 4:29 remaining in the third that put the Rams within one of the Tigers - who threatened to pull the upset much of the day - 64-65. Burns then was fouled and buried two free throws putting TXWES back in front. After a cold stretch for both teams, Burns nailed a shot from downtown with 2:45 to play in the third (69-66) and then right back with another 46 seconds later after Central Christian answered. 10 points in 2:30 - not too shabby.
Despite that run by Burns, the Rams still trailed 75-72 after three quarters, but she found yet another scoring burst in her back pocket. With the Lady Rams trailing 79-78, Burns lit up the gym again from long range. 28 seconds later off a steal from
Lorian Benjamin,
Evie Whorley found Burns in transition - bang! The threes started a 16-0 run that blew the game wide open including eight-straight points from
Nicole Gleason.Â
Tomi Sanchez launched a good three for good measure with 1:22 to play and Texas Wesleyan walked out of McPherson, Kansas with the most points scored in a game since the Rams washed away Crowley's Ridge with 104 points January 3, 2017.
Gleason and Whorley each finished with 18 points, Gleason making 5-of-6 shots and all six free throws and Whorley converting 7-of-15 shots into points.
Karah Sicurella put in nine points off the bench and
Chrystal Ngawuchu chipped in eight points in just 18 minutes on the floor. The backcourt pair of Sicurella and Benjamin contributed 11 of the team's 22 assists.Â
Texas Wesleyan shot over 50 percent in three out of the game's four quarters including an incredible 10-of-13 (77 percent) in the fourth frame. The team was 13-of-23 from deep, the most threes in a game since the Lady Rams made 15 against the Tigers last year.Â
RAMBLINGS
TXWES had just 11 turnovers and scored 22 points off of 14 Tiger giveaways.
In the last four games, Texas wesleyan has hit 56-of-64 free throws (88 percent). It's risen the Lady Rams' free throw percentage as a team into the top 50 in the country for the first time since the season began.
With 12 more steals Saturday, the Rams are now 12th in the country with 306 this season.
NOW IN SIXTH, HOW THE REGULAR SEASON FINISHES
With back-to-back wins on the road, the Lady Rams move into a tie for sixth place with John Brown, but since TXWES swept the season series with the Golden Eagles, the Rams slip into the No. 6 spot. If the Lady Rams want to hold onto that seed, they'll need some help. John Brown has Central Christian and Langston in the final two games of the season - two teams without postseason aspirations in 2019. The Lady Rams have it tougher, needing wins over No. 6 Wayland Baptist and Oklahoma Panhandle State, who currently sits in the No. 8 spot in the SAC.
While beating a highly-ranked opponent might seem challenging, it's not as if the Lady Rams haven't done it before. In 2017, Wayland Baptist lost at the Sid Richardson Center 91-85 in overtime when the Flying Queens ranked 13th in the country.
Lorian Benjamin had seven steals,
Nicole Gleason hit three 3s and
Bailey Broadnax turned in a whopping 27 points.
