FORT WORTH - No. 21 Texas Wesleyan Baseball (24-4, 7-1 SAC) took two from Wayland Baptist (15-6, 5-2 SAC) Friday afternoon to kick off Alumni Weekend, 10-2 in Game 1 and 10-9 in Game 2. The Rams improved to 19-0 at home in 2019 and can cement the fourth-consecutive 20-win home slate with a win Saturday in the third game of the three-game series (first pitch is at noon).
LET IT FLY
In Game 1, Texas Wesleyan hit two home runs as part of a 10-hit outing. In the second inning,
Brayden Bahnsen reached on an error before
Michael Davila put the ball over the wall in left field. It was his second home run of the season - both at home. In the fourth frame,
Caden Williams put a dent in the grass on the other side in left-center, driving in
Houston Glad, who also reached on error. It was Williams' second home run of 2019 too, as he and Davila joined
David Pewenofkit and
Jeddediah Fagg at the top of the team leaderboards.
GETTING OUT OF JAMS
Add two more games to the list in which the Rams won when once trailing. Starting Game 1 pitcher
Max Martinez will have other days in the sun, but teammate
Josh Brown had his back after the Rams gave up the first run of the day early. Brown gave up just two hits with a day-high eight strikeouts in five complete frames, improving his record to 3-1 on the season.Â
In Game 2,
Justin Ward and
Parker Robinson took charge late on the mound. Down 9-7 after the Pioneers scored three runs in the top of the fifth, Ward pitched the sixth inning and Robinson the seventh, getting three combined strikeouts while allowing just one hit as the well with Pioneer opportunities dried up. The Rams used seven different pitchers in seven innings and 10 total, Friday.
EXPLOSIVE INNINGS
Three different times Wayland Baptist and TXWES scored six runs in a single frame. The Rams did it with four in Game 1 to pull away and had six in the first inning of Game 2, before Wayland Baptist rallied for six runs of their own in the third to erase the Rams big lead.Â
OFFENSIVE FIREPOWER
Davila finished an astounding 4-for-7 from the plate with five runs batted in - his 22 on the season now leads the team.
Caden Williams went 3-for-5 in the doubleheader with two RBI, while Bahnsen (3-for-6) and
Alan Campero (3-for-7) each also had two score thanks to their results at the plate.
Mark Schreiner didn't win with timely hitting, but his plate appearances were some of the most meaningful in Game 2. In the third, his single to left field avoided a three-up, three-down inning and gave some confidence back to the offense that scored runs in the three innings that followed. In the fifth frame, Schreiner SAC flied into right field - a ball that nearly dropped - to drive in two runs, with boisterous debate from Wayland Baptist that the runner failed to tag, since the call was so close. Those claims fell on deaf ears.
Schreiner was also involved in the winning run, which turned out to be a walk. With the bases loaded, Schreiner was given ball four and a trot to first, giving the Rams a 10-9 advantage.
ALUMNI CELEBRATION
In honor of the 30th anniversary of the 1989 Heart of Texas Conference Champions team, the program will honor Alumni starting at 11:40 a.m. Saturday, including a ceremonial first pitch. After the game, alumni will gather for a group photo. Share in some history with the Rams and watch Texas Wesleyan go for their 25th win of the season. All action at Sycamore Park.Â
