Baseball splits first two with Southwestern Christian

BETHANY, OK - No. 17 Texas Wesleyan Baseball (28-5, 9-2 SAC) took a trip up to Southwestern Christian (22-8, 6-5 SAC) Friday and cruised to a Game 1 win, 6-1. Things were a little tougher in Game 2, when the Eagles knocked in four doubles during a 7-1 victory for the home team.

In Game 1, the Rams jumped all over the Eagles with hits up and down the lineup - 11 from eight different players. Michael Davila bounced back from an uncharacteristic 1-of-7 showing against Arlington Baptist in the mid-week non-conference tilts, to go 2-for-4 with 2 RBI. Caden Williams was also 2-for-4, scoring in the first with teammate Houston Glad (Glad singled and Williams doubled in the inning).

Strikeouts were hard to come by for both teams. TXWES - second in the nation with 279 coming in - got three with Cameron Vige, who went the distance, facing 28 total batters. Southwestern Christian earned just one K against the Rams offense in the first game.

By the third frame, the Rams already held a 6-0 lead and got to protect their big lead the rest of the way, a privilege Texas Wesleyan hasn't found themselves in too much this season, as the team's specialty has been coming up clutch on many occasions down the stretch to pull away.

In Game 2, everything went cold for the Rams. TXWES used five different pitchers, none of which found the success they wanted. Ian Nash had two strikeouts against seven batters but was charged with four wild pitches. Josh Brown saw the most time on the mound - 2.1 innings with a pair of strikeouts as well.

Williams, Davila and Sheadion Jamanika earned hits against Southwestern Christian's Victor Del Carmen who struck out six in a full seven innings of work.

CONFERENCE UPDATE
The Rams are still in first despite the loss, but are now tied with Oklahoma City atop the conference, both with 9-2 records. No. 9 USAO is right behind them at 8-3.

Parker Robinson leads all conference pitchers in ERA, with a 0.56 mark through 32 innings pitched. He holds the nation's best batting average figure for pitchers, a measly .123 average for knee-shaking opponents. That is currently the record for best ERA in a season, topping Gary Young's 1.04 ERA, a record that dates back to 1972.

WHAT'S NEXT
The Rams will face Southwestern Christian in the third game of the three-game series Saturday at 12 p.m. before coming back home for a huge litmus test series against No. 5 Oklahoma City at Sycamore Park starting Friday March 29.
