Summers grand slam helps Lady Rams split with Evangels

FORT WORTH - Opportunities for grand slam's don't come often. When they do, the probability of bringing everyone home is slim. How about a grand slam to end a game? That's what Kylie Summers did for the Lady Rams Saturday afternoon as Texas Wesleyan Softball (7-19, 4-8 SAC) shook off a 7-6 Game 1 loss to Mid-America Christian (11-7, 6-5 SAC) to win the second, 11-2 in six innings.

It was the freshman's first home run of her collegiate career, to make the occasion even more special. The deep shot to left-center capped a 15-hit showing by the offense who helped Makenna Aycock and Lacy Mann on the mound, who gave their all against the No. 1 team in the country, University of Science and Arts-Oklahoma, Friday.

Summers ended up with 5 RBI in Game 2. Her other RBI came in the fifth on a double to nearly the same location, scoring Aycock. Mann was 3-for-3 with a RBI while Hailey Hollingsworth was 2-for-3 driving in three runs. Taylor Sutton also had a multi-hit game, connecting on two of her three opportunities at the plate. In all, the Lady Rams had six hits greater than singles (four doubles, one triple and the one home run).

The 15 hits were the most in a game since TXWES had 16 against Central Christian last season on April 27, 2018.

Defensively, Savannah Brixey had the highlight of the second game, extending an arm and hauling down the ball to end the sixth frame at the fence. It might have scored a run - maybe two - with runners on first and second and the Evangels down 7-2 at the time.

Game 1 included some extreme wind gusts, a brief downpour, 17 hits, eight errors and a laundry list of opportunities wasted by both sides. In the end, MACU squeaked out a one-run win. The Evangels ended a three-game slide at Sycamore as both teams were fortunate the rain - for the most part - stayed away after the series had to be postponed twice due to weather in 2018.

Texas Wesleyan was again led by Lacy Mann and Kylie Summers at the plate. Mann was 3-for-4 with a RBI (6-of-7 on the day in total). Summers was 2-for-3 with a RBI (4-for-7 total). Summers has moved up from the nine-hole to second in the batting order and has seen three-straight starts. Mann leads the team in batting average this season - .404 - and has now had a hit in eight of her last nine games.

Aycock struck out four in relief of Mann on the mound but takes the loss after the Lady Rams came back to tie the game with a four-run fourth, headlined by Aycock's triple down the left-field line. Mann also had a triple down the opposite line in the fifth, bringing in Bailey Terry.
