FORT WORTH - Texas Wesleyan Softball (9-19) got the better of Our Lady of the Lake University (10-11) 3-2 and 10-5 on a glorious Wednesday afternoon at Sycamore Park. It was the Lady Rams' third-straight win, the longest winning streak so far this season.
A bizarre first game was nearly completed in an hour. Through the first five innings, neither team had a hit and zeros littered the game summary, including seven different hits that went directly into defensive gloves. It wasn't until the sixth frame that OLLU got their offense going and the Lady Rams responded with an even bigger punch-back.
With Texas Wesleyan down 2-0 with one out,
Bailey Terry got the first hit for the Rams offense - a bloop single to right field. She advanced to second on a passed ball before
Lacy Mann delivered again - a single through the left side that Terry wisely waited to pass her by to avoid interference. Terry scored and the Rams were off.
Katherine Knotts came in to run for Mann then stole second, putting
Taylor Sutton in the exact position Mann faced. Sutton delivered in an even bigger way with a rocket-launcher to center field that easily cleared the fence for a two-run homer to give TXWES the lead.
It was Sutton's first home run - now the fifth Lady Ram to hit one this season. It was Mann's fifth game in a row with successful contact and third-straight matchup responsible for a RBI.
Game 2 was all about the very special quest for history. With family in attendance and the bases loaded in the bottom of the second, Terry tied the program record for most home runs in a career with her 33rd home run in four seasons as a Ram, earning her fifth of 2019. Rachel Hampton's 33 homers from 2004-2007 has officially been put on notice. The grand slam was the second in three games for Texas Wesleyan after
Kylie Summers nailed one to the bulletin board that run-ruled Mid-America Christian last week.
Terry stepped back to the plate in the fourth, but was walked. Her opportunity in the sixth was still successful - another single to right (overall, she went 3-for-4 on the day with 4 RBI). She scored on that single thanks to another timely hit from Summers - a two RBI single to left field. That Summers shot started a streak of three-straight hits including a
Hailey Hollingsworth single to left center and a two RBI double from
Kaitlyn Johnson into right. Johnson went 3-for-4 in Game 2, her first three-hit game of the season.
Makenna Aycock had the stuff on the mound in Game 1, striking out five in a full seven innings of work allowing just three hits. While Mann didn't have the Ks in the more explosive offensive game of the day for both teams, she trusted her defense that successfully put out 18 batters. TXWES pitchers did not hit a single batter, while the Saints pitching staff hit four total - including both Aycock and Mann while thw pitching duo attempted to generate some offense for the Rams.
WHAT'S TRENDING
For the fifth-consecutive doubleheader, Texas Wesleyan has scored more runs in Game 2 than in Game 1. In three of those games, TXWES scored four runs in a single frame.
For the tenth-straight game, Texas Wesleyan have allowed single-digit runs. From March 18 to April 17 in 2018, the Lady Rams didn't allow double-digit runs in 20 consecutive games. This season's run started on March 16.
WHAT'S NEXT
A critical conference weekend and an opportunity for the Lady Rams to move up the conference standings. TXWES will host Langston on Friday and Bacone on Saturday. The two programs are a combined 4-20 in the Sooner Athletic Conference in 2019, both below Texas Wesleyan in the standings, which have the Rams crawling up slowly - now occupying the sixth spot.
