Terry breaks program HR record to help Rams topple Langston

FORT WORTH - A memory that will last a lifetime - that's what Bailey Terry achieved Friday afternoon at Sycamore Park. On the second pitch thrown to her in her first at-bat of the day, Terry ripped a shot to center field, her family shouting it was gone the moment her bat made contact with that special ball. Terry hit her 34th career home run, breaking Rachel Hampton's record that has stood for 12 years.

Texas Wesleyan Softball (11-19, 6-8 SAC) used that moment to cruise the rest of Game 1, 8-2, and then blanked the Langston Lions (10-19, 4-12 SAC) 5-0 in the second game to grow its win streak to five games.

"It's pretty awesome," Terry said. "I planned when I first got here to leave a legacy and I guess that's my way of doing it. I was just looking for my pitch and I just went. A couple of weeks ago i decided to focus more on what I need to do to help my team out instead of focusing on everything else so I feel like that's helped me out a lot."

Terry has 9 RBI in the last three games. Her 25 RBI this season leads the team as she continues to expand on her career RBI total record - another program record. Terry had a double and a single later in the first game and made incredible throws one after the other in the infield throughout the day, showing the confidence the most prolific heavy hitter in program history should have.

"Anytime someone breaks a record, it's awesome, especially a career record that's been here for so long but most importantly I think it's awesome to see someone who's also very humble," said Head Coach Shannon Gower. "Every year she sets goals and she reaches them and we're only halfway through this season ... there is going to be more. She's making that record higher and it's going to be harder to reach. I'm very proud of her - it's a good way to finish a senior season."

It was certainly Terry's day, but just about everyone for the Rams shined as the team continues their turnaround before hitting the road for a grueling 16 games in 13 days starting April 5. On the mound, Lacy Mann gave up just one run in the top of the first despite giving Langston some hope early and shook off early runners-on with grace, striking out six, giving up just two runs. Makenna Aycock struck out nine with the help of her defense, which stranded six runners.

Mann was killer at the plate, connecting on 5-of-8 at-bats with a RBI in the fifth and the sixth frame. Those were critical as Langston made adjustments after the first round, tightening up their defense to keep the game close through four and a half innings of work. Saeya Esparza was 2-for-3 in Game 1 out of the eight spot - in fact the last three batters in the lineup (Esparza, Kaitlyn Johnson and Ashton Davis) combined to hit 4-for-8 with 2 RBI.

In Game 2, Kylie Summers found her rhythm to connect on 2-of-3 chances as did her teammate Taylor Sutton.

ERROR FREE
Texas Wesleyan played error-free softball in both games Friday, the 11th and 12th games this season without a defensive mistake. The Lady Rams had 17 such games in 2018. There are still 22 games left on the 2019 regular season slate.

WHAT'S NEXT
Weather permitting, the Lady Rams will host Bacone Saturday with first pitch slated for noon. The Warriors are winless on the season, 0-12.
