FORT WORTH - They've done it again. Down 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth, No. 21 Texas Wesleyan Baseball (20-3) - once more - clawed back from a deficit to pull out a victory, beating Texas A&M Texarkana (9-12) 3-2, to coincidentally take a 3-2 all-time series lead on what turned out to be a gorgeous day for baseball at Sycamore Park.
The comeback was the team's ninth of the season. The home record is now 17-0 and the 20 wins on March 5 is 18 days ahead of the team's 20th win in 2018.
How they did it this time was in the bottom of the 8th. The inning started with
Mark Schreiner taking one for the team, given first on a hit by pitch. A SAC bunt by
Tanner Amaral pushed
Jeddediah Fagg (pinch runner) to second and then
Alan Campero had enough pace to beat out thr throw from the short stop - one out, runners on first and third. Enter
Joseph Barfield.
Barfield, who came into the day leading the team in RBI with 17, got another - a single to right center. The Eagles caused more trouble then they should have, misjudging the ball's landing zone with trouble fielding what should have been a routine single. Barfield advanced to second and Campero managed to score from first. That sequence gave the Rams the lead, but also in a way righted a wrong for Texas Wesleyan's defense that allowed a left-field error to push through one run in the third to open up the scoring.
Pitching has been a hot topic of conversation and while the Rams only struck out six (averaging nearly 10 a contest coming in) all pitchers who saw action were efficient.
Garrett Moltzan got the start and lasted a full four innings, allowing just two hits with two strikeouts and only one walk.
Steven Frederick got two innings and didn't give up any hits to eight batters faced.
Max Martinez got the win (2-0) pitching two full innings with 3 Ks and no hits allowed while
Parker Robinson got his team-leading third save of the season in the ninth where he brushed away three batters with ease.
Michael Davila was one of two Rams managing a multi-hit game in a pitching battle. Davila went 2-for-4 including a double down the left-field line. The other was Barfield, who finished 2-for-3 with a RBI. For both players, it was their sixth multi-hit game of the season.
Caden Williams added a RBI (SAC fly) to his name in the fifth to get the Rams on the board.
The defense turned an impressive four double plays Tuesday, bringing their total for the season up to 22, nearly one double play a game. It was the most double plays turned in a game since the team had four against Southwestern Christian on April 29, 2017.
WHAT'S NEXT
Texas Wesleyan heads to Goodwell, Oklahoma for a three-game series with Oklahoma Panhandle State this weekend, starting on Friday, to get Sooner Athletic Conference play going again. The Rams are 10-3 all-time against the Aggies.
Next Tuesday the Rams return home to Sycamore Park for a statement game against No. 12 LSU-Shreveport, who handed the Rams two of their three losses on the season in Louisiana. It will be one of the biggest tests to TXWES' current 18-game winning streak at Sycamore Park, dating back to last season. The two teams are well acquainted, playing eight times in the last three seasons out of conference.
