GOODWELL, OK - A lineup shift, plenty of healthy hitters and 12 more strikeouts helped Texas Wesleyan Baseball (22-3, 5-0 SAC) take the first two games of a three game series with Oklahoma Panhandle State (13-9, 4-2 SAC) 6-0 and 8-6 in Goodwell, Oklahoma, Friday.
The Rams took control in the fifth inning of Game 1, breaking a low-scoring, 1-0 ball game. All the offense heated up with
Brayden Bahnsen's single leading the charge.
Caden Williams was walked and then a failed pick-off attempt helped Bahnsen advance to third.
Sheadion Jamanika walked. With the bases loaded,
Michael Davila hit another timely ball - a double into the gap for 3 RBI to up TXWES' advantage to 4-0. Davila scored later in the inning on a SAC fly from
Alan Campero.
It's the second conference game Davila had 3 RBI in the same game. The catcher/left-fielder had three against Central Christian last weekend. Davila, who had been the lead-off hitter the last couple of weeks, was shifted to the five-hole.
Jeddediah Fagg, who had been in a slump and constantly getting hit and walked, was moved to the lead-off position Friday and found success, connecting on 2-of-5 chances in Game 1 and 1-of-4 with a 2 RBI double to right-center in Game 2.
A ton of bats were working for the Rams against the Aggies, who had 17 hits in 14 innings.
Joseph Barfield went 3-of-5 while getting walked three times.
David Pewenofkit connected on his only chance in Game 1 in the designated hitter spot.
Tanner Amaral also had a hit in the matinee.
In Game 2, the Rams got a hit from eight different players, including the first five in the lineup and the biggest crack of the day - a homer from Campero. Barfield singled and Pewenofkit took four balls, setting up Campero with a 3 RBI opportunity. His delivery on that opportunity gave the Rams a more comfortable 8-3 advantage and added to Campero's RBI total. He managed a RBI earlier in the top of the fourth on a ground out that advanced
Brooks Wallace home.Â
Houston Glad got the start in Game 1 and went the distance, striking out six allowing four hits while not walking a single batter, improving his record to 4-1 on the season.
Cameron Vige improved to 5-1, pitching 5.1 innings with five Ks.
Max Martinez struck out the only batter he faced.
OPSU walked a whopping 12 batters in their second attempt to take out Texas Wesleyan and their 22 wins, second in the nation only to No. 12 LSU-Shreveport's 24. Speaking of which ...
WHAT'S NEXT
A battle of baseball heavyweights will clash at Sycamore Park next Tuesday at 2 p.m. when LSU-Shreveport comes to town. The Rams are hoping to get revenge after the Pilots took two games from them earlier this season on a Louisiana road trip. With a win, Texas Wesleyan would improve to 18-0 at home in 2019.
