GOODWELL, OK - No. 21 Texas Wesleyan Baseball (22-4, 5-1 SAC) had nine times this season come back to win a game. Despite managing to re-gain the lead after digging a 3-0 hole in the first, Oklahoma Panhandle State (15-9, 4-2 SAC) had one last surge to top the Rams, 9-6. TXWES still won the three-game series 2-1 and will head back to Fort Worth for a mid-week tilt at home.
Pitching out of the bullpen was incredible down the stretch as neither offense could find any answers. It was 9-6 in the bottom of the fifth inning when
Parker Robinson came in. In 3.1 innings, Robinson struck out six batters giving up no hits, walking just one. Not to be out-done, OPSU pitcher Tyler Brant got six strikeouts in four innings - getting action starting in the fourth frame - with just one hit allowed. Before Brant and Robinson came in to pitch, baseball's were spattered all over the field.
The Rams were led at the plate by
Brooks Wallace's 2-for-4 with 3 RBI. In the bottom of the second, Wallace's single down the right-field line with runners at second and third is just what the doctor ordered, scoring
Joseph Barfield. One inning later, Wallace homered - his first of the season - joining eight teammates in the home run category.
Craig Mattes also scored on the home run after pinch running for
Tanner Amaral. Amaral reached base on an error in left-field with two outs, the only error for the Aggies on the day - a costly one.Â
Brayden Bahnsen was also 2-of-4 at the plate while
Caden Williams and
Michael Davila each turned in doubles.
Alan Campero was 1-of-3 and used a SAC fly early in the third to drive in Davila.
After taking a 6-3 lead off the home run, Oklahoma Panhandle State used a balk, an error, a SAC fly and a pair of hits to score six unanswered runs. The Aggies registered 11 hits, and got a banner day from Payton Rhodes. who came into the game hitting .311 on the season and 1-of-10 in his last four contests.
OPSU was 13th in the country in stolen bases coming into the game and produced zero Saturday, caught stealing once. The two teams left a combined 21 baserunners stranded - the Rams preventing 13 from scoring.
ONLY ONE REMAINS
After Saturday's competition, only Wayland Baptist is still unbeaten in conference play at 5-0. The Rams now sit a half game back in second.
WHAT'S NEXT
No. 12 LSU-Shreveport comes to Sycamore Park to try to stop the Rams' 18-game winning streak at home. Texas Wesleyan has beaten the Pilots 18 times in the all-time series. Start time is 2 p.m. Tuesday. The Pilots have played 28 games already this season and has produced plenty of offensive firepower - fourth in the nation in doubles and home runs per game. The Rams will counter with their pitching staff, which is now up to 236 strikeouts, which is back up to No. 1 in the nation after Saturday's 11 Ks.
