FORT WORTH - No. 14 Texas Wesleyan Baseball (37-12, 16-7 SAC) lost a pair of games to No. 8 University of Science and Arts-Oklahoma (37-10, 21-3 SAC) 5-1 and 10-1 Saturday afternoon on Senior Day as the Drovers competed a critical sweep that separated themselves from the rest of the conference with one week to go in the regular season.
In the final inning of Saturday's doubleheader, the Rams used a
Sheadion Jamanika sacrifice fly to bring home
Tanner Amaral, keeping their scoring streak alive. The Rams haven't been shutout since losing at Dallas Christian 1-0 on April 15, 2015 and hasn't been blanked at home since a loss to Jarvis Christian January 31 of that year.Â
Amaral's single through the left side allowed him to get on base in the seventh. In the series, Amaral recorded three of the team's 12 hits, earning at least one hit in every game.Â
A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS
From the very beginning of Senior Day, things just didn't bounce Texas Wesleyan's way. With two outs in the top of the first in Game 1, Alex Sanchez sent a ball to deep right field.
Joseph Barfield went all the way back to retrieve it - a chance to end the inning - and crashed into the right-field fence, leaving a dent in the wall. He collected himself in time to prevent a run, but on the next play allowed a routine rolling ball on a single through the right side to roll right past his glove scoring the Drovers first run of the day. Barfield left the game and did not return.
Two batters later, USAO first baseman Daniel Lafarga took an arrant
Houston Glad pitch to the side of the head. Trainers worked on Lafarga for the next four innings without leaving the Drover dugout. The 6'4" first baseman did not return.
In the fourth inning with two down, a high pop up in between third baseman
Mark Schreiner and shortstop
Alan Campero ended up falling in the dirt between the two and USAOÂ scored two runs after that to go up 3-0. Schreiner had the play of the day earlier, however, flipping a throw over to second base to help hold off the Drovers offense from scoring position.
SHOCKING SYCAMORE
Coming into the weekend's series, the Rams had produced a 28-3 record at home. It was the first time the Drovers swept a season series in Fort Worth since the Rams joined the Sooner - but these weren't your ordinary Drovers. USAO, now winners of 16 in a row, made just one pitching change the entire series and struck out 24 Rams. Texas Wesleyan earned 16 strikeouts over the weekend, now just two strikeouts away from the program record for strikeouts in a season.
SERIES LEADERS AT THE PLATE
Caden Williams hit 3-for-7, Amaral earned three hits on 10 at-bats and Campero hit 2-for-8 with a RBI. Jamanika had 2 RBI on sacrifice flies, both during the doubleheader. No hitter on either side hit greater than a double in the scorching sun without a cloud in the sky, Saturday.
WHAT'S NEXT
Texas Wesleyan is slated to face Mid-America Christian Monday afternoon at 3:00 p.m., a game that was moved from Oklahoma City Saturday April 6 due to inclement weather and then moved again from Tuesday afternoon with rain coming into the area.
Texas Wesleyan will wrap up the regular season with a three game series against SAGU starting Friday in Fort Worth, then finishing up in Waxahachie for a Saturday doubleheader.
