WAXAHACHIE, Texas – The No. 14 Texas Wesleyan baseball team (41-12, 20-7) completed a series sweep over SAGU (22-26, 8-17 SAC) with a pair of wins at Lion Field on Saturday. The Rams topped SAGU 5-1 before taking a 2-1 nail-biter in eight innings to cap the day.
The Rams are planted in the third position in the SAC standings, behind leader No. 8 Science & Arts and No. 9 Oklahoma City. Southwestern Christian enters post-season play in fourth. Wayland Baptist, Mid-America Christian, Panhandle State, and SAGU round out the top eight. There are no tie-breakers this season, as all 10 teams have at least a two-game gap between them.
In game one, the Rams got off two a hot start and led 4-0 after a
Jeddediah Fagg 3-run blast. Fagg gave Texas Wesleyan an insurance run in the fourth after a Lion error led to a RBI single to shortstop.
SAGU finally got on the board in the sixth on an Andrew Diaz solo shot, but Ram starter
Houston Glad (9-3) didn't flinch. The senior from Claremore, Okla. limited the Lions to just one run on two hits. He walked one and struck out six.
In game two, the Rams picked up a run in the second after an error allowed
Sheadion Jamanika to score, but Kyle Coolidge put the equalizer over the fence. The game stayed deadlocked in the 1-1 tie for five straight innings until TXWES struck in the eighth.
With two down in the eighth,
Tanner Amaral put a charge in ball the landed down the right field line for a double.
Michael Davila stepped to the plate after a
Caden Williams walk, and laced one into center to plate the game winner.
Parker Robinson (6-0) made quick work of SAGU in the home half to seal the win. Robinson went three scoreless innings, allowing just a hit and one walk, while striking out five.
Jesse Ramirez also had a strong outing. He threw five innings, allowed one run on just three hits, one walk, while fanning seven batters in the win.
Texas Wesleyan baseball finishes with 40-plus wins for the first time since 2013, and its highest winning percentage (.774) since 2007 (42-10, .803).
The team will await official seeding for the SAC tournament, held in Oklahoma City from May 3-6.
