FORT WORTH – Texas Wesleyan Women's Soccer (1-2) wasted no time getting goals on the board Tuesday night at Handley Field, eventually netting a whopping 11 against Texas College in an 11-0 rout for the Lady Rams.
The 11 goals were the most in a game since September 1, 2017 when TXWES hung 13 on Jarvis Christian. Tameir Grosvenor and Savanna Barron each had a hat trick of goals – Grosvenor added two assists – and Danielle Trought impressed with two goals off the bench in her Fort Worth debut, after transferring to UTEP in the off-season.
The Lady Rams rifled off 31 shots and kept goalkeeper Christy Zwart's jersey out of the wash, not even surrendering a single shot attempt.
"It was a solid performance from the team as a group," said Head Coach Josh Gibbs. "We needed to play well, but there is still work to be done. We continued to make silly mistakes in dangerous places but did the job today."
The action started in the 11th minute when Taylor Ross scored the first goal of the season, assisted by newcomer Julia Soriano. Soriano got hurt on the play but later came back in the game, showing off her toughness. Soriano was part of a stingy defensive core that includes Lindsey Beckrich, Savannah Hart and Sierra Reich, who put a goal in the back of the net despite her defensive nature in the 24th minute.
After Grosvenor spent a rare weekend goalless, she spent the first 45 minutes working with new teammates in more open space than she was allowed against two of the top soccer squads in the NAIA to open the season. Once she was subbed back in, later in the second half, she was her electric old self.
The junior poured it on, scoring three goals in 21 minutes – first in the 64th minute, then in the 79th minute and finally in the 85th minute. Trought scored her second goal in the 90th minute, but the better connection might have been her first, off a Grosvenor corner and onto Trought's bouncy head of hair to put the Rams up 5-0.
Trought also assisted on three of the seven assisted celebrations. Reyna Ramirez accounted for the last goal of the first half in the 41st minute.
With a win on the books, the Lady Rams will welcome McPherson to town Saturday August 31 at 1 p.m.
