FORT WORTH, TX - Texas Wesleyan Women's Soccer (5-3) is owning the week. After defeating LSU-Shreveport 4-0 on Tuesday, the Lady Rams put up six goals Thursday in a 6-2 victory over Houston-Victoria (3-4), including four goals from
Tameir Grosvenor.
Her 13 goals this season now ranks fifth in the country and her 59 career goals sits just 16 off the program record for career goals scored.
"Being with my team (was what felt good today)," Grosvenor said. "That was it. Figuring it out, it wasn't me - it was them."
As Grosvenor is first to point out, the win is not all about her. The Lady Rams are connecting passes with extreme chemistry. After TXWESÂ earned a slight edge in shots in the first half (6-5), the squad dominated the shot chart 18-5 in the final 45 minutes as the Jaguars wilted. Defender
Savannah Hart earned her first goal of the season (unassisted) in the 64th minute, a response that came just 34 seconds after Houston-Victoria caught the Lady Rams defense drowsy after Grosvenor's fourth-straight goal in the 62nd minute.
"UHV is a well-coached, hard working, physical team," Gibbs said. "I was pretty disappointed to give up the two goals. We switched off for a bit on the first goal and they made us pay. That said, it shows how far we've come as a group to turn around and score 34 seconds later. All in all, a good performance against a tough opponent. I was very proud of the team for solving the issues the game gave us in real time."
In the later stages,
Kristen Carter and
Cat Smith came off the bench to add an exclamation point on Carter's goal and Smith's assist. It was the first for each in 2019.
But Grosvenor dominated headlines early. Nearly unstoppable, No. 12 ripped through the Houston-Victoria defense in the final tune-up before conference play. Her five assists this season are already one off tying her career high and she's increased her goals per game average to 1.6 as a junior, the third consecutive season she's increased that average.
At the top,
Taylor Ross, Savannah Barron and Danielle Trout are a lethal supporting cast. The chemistry built after a 4-1 win over Paul Quinn, that failed to meet the Lady Rams lofty expectations, has been apparent.
"He told us we were better than how we were playing," Grosvenor said of the postgame following Paul Quinn. "We're figuring it out. At practice, we've been practicing through-balls, that's where we were kind of failing at. Our midfield has gotten so much better, I'm not even going to say that it's them getting balls to us, it's just them staying connected."
Unfairly overshadowed by the offensive explosions was the continued acceleration of
Lindsey Beckrich's game. The junior defender transfer from Dallas Baptist has two assists this week and has completely shut down her side of the field in consecutive contests. While goalkeepers usually dominate Player of the Week honors, Beckrich has put herself in rare contention with her recent play. She'd be the first non-goalie to win the award in at least the last three years.
"I feel like she should be defensive player of the week every week," Grosvenor said. "Honestly, all of our backs are that good."
Grosvenor's goals came in the 16th minute (assisted by Beckrich), the 47th and the 54th prior to upping the ante on her hat-trick before the Jaguars finally picked themselves up off the grass.
In the last three matches, Texas Wesleyan has outscored opponents 14-3 but challenges lie ahead. University of Science and Arts-Oklahoma carries a No. 12 ranking into conference season, with John Brown not far behind at No. 14. All three losses this season for TXWES have been against teams either ranked in the top 25 or receiving votes in the latest NAIA Coaches' Poll.
Conference play gets underway next Tuesday, September 24 at Southwest Assemblies of God before Southwestern Christian comes to Martin Field October 1. Only two teams in the Sooner Athletic Conference are below .500 in non-conference.
