Lady Rams stun Evangels with record-tying onslaught from deep

FORT WORTH, TX - Texas Wesleyan Women's Basketball (10-4, 5-2 SAC) tied a program record with 15 three-pointers in a 80-64 victory over (RV) Mid-America Christian (12-4, 5-2 SAC) launching into third place in the Sooner Athletic Conference. Nicole Gleason scored a career high 29 points with career highs in field goals made (10), three-pointers made (seven) and steals (seven). She also had six rebounds, an assist and a block.

Ten of the Lady Rams' 15 threes came in the first half. Short-handed again without regular starter Chrystal Ngawuchu in the lineup, TXWES was not bashful about putting up shots early in the shot clock, giving the Lady Rams more opportunities to capitalize from deep - 20 of the team's first 26 shots were from beyond the arc. The 15 threes ties the team's output against Central Christian from two seasons ago.

Texas Wesleyan scored 26 points in the first quarter then followed the first ten minutes up with 22 points in the second and third frames. The Evangels were held to their lowest scoring output since a 68-62 loss on November 16.

Destiney Winkfield looked to have some spring back in her step, scoring 16 points in 25 minutes. Makayla Coy added 10 points and five rebounds, while Jordan Brightwell nabbed a career high 12 boards to go along with eight points, getting a season high 32 minutes on the floor. Arguably the strongest utility players this decade, Evie Whorley pulled in nine more rebounds and registered four more assists in her 15th-consecutive start. Hailee Walls led the team in assists with five.

Darby Pugh had her best night as a Lady Ram as well, scoring nine points off the bench, hitting three-of-four beyond the arc. She's now scored 15 points in her last 18 minutes on the floor shooting 5-of-6 from deep during that stretch.

Despite all the positives up and down the bench, Gleason shined. A TXWES baller for four seasons saved her strongest performance for when the team needed a big lift at home. She scored the game's first five points in the first 39 seconds and her ability to hit from outside not only helped her find other opportunities down the lane, but also freed up her teammates for open looks, drive-and-kicks and easy lay-ups inside for posts. Her defensive tenacity only made the night for MACU more miserable - the Evangels hit just 6-of-29 from the perimeter, missing 15 of their first 16 attempts.

The Lady Rams will face University of Science and Arts-Oklahoma Saturday at 2 p.m., one of three teams now 5-2 in the SAC. USAO lost to MACU 75-73 in overtime last month but earned a 69-57 win on the road at Southwest Assemblies of God Thursday night.
