Gleason joins 1,000-point club, but TXWES falls to USAO

CHICKASHA, OK - Texas Wesleyan Women's Basketball (10-5, 5-3 SAC) welcomed a new member to the 1,000-point club Saturday afternoon when Nicole Gleason hit a bucket in transition during the third quarter of TXWES' 99-67 loss to University of Science and Arts-Oklahoma (11-5, 6-2 SAC).

Gleason becomes the fourth player to play sometime in the last decade, 2010-2019, to reach 1,000 career points in a Ram uniform and the latest since Katelynn Threats' season in 2017. She led the team in scoring against USAO with 14 points after launching a career high 29 points on Mid-America Christian at home Thursday night.

While the excitement over Gleason's achievement is worth celebrating, the Lady Rams would have preferred celebrating the milestone in a victory. TXWES fell behind 7-0 and never was able to gain a lead and now sits in fifth place in a crowded top-half of the Sooner Athletic Conference nearing the mid-way point of conference season.

Jordan Brightwell added 13 points and nine rebounds while Evie Whorley took charge offensively with 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting, her fourth game in double figures this season. Destiney Winkfield added eight points and freshman Makayla Coy, who started for the fifth time, added seven points.

Gleason also had seven boards, five assists and three steals, cementing her as a strong candidate for her second SAC Player of the Week award this campaign. She's climbing the national rankings in takeaways, now with 43, in amongst the top 25 NAIA competitors. She had 10 steals this week alone.

The Drovers' Reyna Ammons, who leads the conference in steals with 53, had everything going for her Saturday, netting 32 (the most she's scored in her two seasons at USAO) on an absurd 13-of-16 shooting from the floor, adding three steals to her marks in the process.

A pair of opponents Texas Wesleyan will be favored against come to town this week. Langston (3-5 in the SAC) will play the Lady Rams Thursday night at 8 p.m. while Central Christian (2-6 in the SAC) visits Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
