FORT WORTH, TX - With
Destiney Winkfield back to showing the burst she had at the start of the season and this newfound high-octane offense for the Lady Rams humming, Texas Wesleyan Women's Basketball (11-5, 6-3 SAC) didn't always do things the easy way Thursday night at the Sid Richardson Center, but made plenty of electric plays to put the Langston Lions (5-8, 3-6 SAC) in the rear-view mirror with an 87-75 victory.
TXWES scored 51 points in the second half and scored over 80 points for the fifth time in the team's last eight outings. Winkfield scored 20 with five assists and three rebounds in 29 minutes.
Evie Whorley's offense continues to find cohesion within the offense in her second-straight 13-point performance.
But it was the bench that elevated the Lady Rams play against Langston, scoring 33 points with five assists and just three turnovers. Most of that bench production came from
Alexus Brigham and
Hailee Walls. Walls set the tempo early on the boards, grabbing five in the first half. Her shot was falling in the second half, finishing with 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting. The orange sea of Lion players seemed to part the paint anytime Brigham drove and her unabashed aggressiveness down the lane helped her scoop up a seson-high 17 points.
After Texas Wesleyan scored the first seven points to start the game, the Lions found a way to hang around, largely in part to the NAIA's No. 4 scorer, Asheika Alexander. Alexander put up 29 points and seven rebounds, at times willing her team to not bow out quietly. After the 7-0 mini slump, Langston played the Lady Rams even through three quarters in a 61-54 ball game heading into the fourth quarter.
Even with 3:45 seconds to play, it was still a seven point lead for the home squad, 75-68, but the depth and team-ball of TXWES propelled the Rams to their sixth-consecutive victory over Langston. The final 12 points were scored by six different players - Winkfield,
Chrystal Ngawuchu,
Makayla Coy, Brigham, Walls and Whorley.
While
Nicole Gleason may have not had a career night scoring, she was a stat-sheet filler: nine points, five rebounds, five assists and five steals.
Jordan Brightwell was out of the lineup due to a double technical at University of Science and Arts-Oklahoma, but will be back in the lineup Saturday when Central Christian visits the Lady Rams at 1 p.m. The Tigers (5-11, 2-7 SAC) lost at Southwestern Assemblies of God Thursday, 91-70.
It's worth noting just how fast paced this game was. The Rams took 72 shots, one off a season high, while Langston hoisted 74 - LU's season high was 89 against Central Christian. The two teams combined for 30 offensive rebounds (77 rebounds total) and 37 turnovers (Langston had 22) leading to a frenetic pace the entire evening.
After missing their first eight three-pointers, Texas Wesleyan finished 6-for-10.
