Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Cameron Irvine

More clutch free throws help net No. 19 Rams another close win

PLAINVIEW, TX - No. 19 Texas Wesleyan Men's Basketball (15-5, 8-3 SAC) hit 9-of-12 free throws in the final three minutes to stave off (RV) Wayland Baptist (15-7, 6-5 SAC) on the road, 88-81.

The Rams won despite not hitting a shot from the field and only got to hoist two jumpers in the final 4:46. That's because TXWES spent all its time at the line as the Pioneers couldn't help themselves trying to create momentum down the stretch, a game Wayland so desperately wanted after getting shellacked 97-50 in Fort Worth earlier this month. WBU only led once - by a point - in the first two minutes of the game.

It wasn't just the free throws that helped get the 'W' - the team's third consecutive victory on the road ... the bench came to life. Joe Cook-Green hit 10-of-11 shots, scored 24 points and dished out three assists. His strongest offensive performance in a Ram uniform, Cook-Green hit all three of his shots from deep - just 3-of-16 from downtown this season before his outburst in west Texas Thursday night. He wasn't the only star that shot the lights out.

Akeem White was hyper-aggressive, taking 17 shots in 24 minutes and hit on 10 of those 17 attempts, also scoring 24 points while grabbing seven rebounds, which he's achieved at minimum now in five-straight ball games.. He has 36 rebounds in his last 108 minutes on the court and has scored in double figures in 12-straight contests and hit a near season high 80 percent from the line (4-of-5).

The on-fire Rams shot 55.6 percent from the floor as a team, improving on their 12th ranking nationally on the subject. Davon Berry nearly notched a double-double with 10 points and eight boards, Sam Lorenzen chipped in 10 points and Sebastian Karwoski found 12 in 21 minutes of action.

TXWES hit only five threes, but the driving offense inside has won five of seven since its last game with double-digit makes from deep, showing the squads versatility offensively. The Pioneers hauled in a mere 24 rebounds, the lowest totals on the glass since grabbing 23 boards on January 21, 2016 in a 86-84 loss to ... Texas Wesleyan. The Rams shot 54.1 percent in that contest.

The Rams will visit Oklahoma Panhandle State Saturday - the Aggies are winless in conference play, losing their last three Sooner Athletic Conference games by over 30 points.
