GOODWELL, OK - Texas Wesleyan Men's Basketball (16-5, 9-3 SAC) did most of its heavy lifting in the first half against Oklahoma Panhandle State (4-16, 0-12 SAC) out-scoring the Aggies 50-30 through the first 20 minutes of a 86-67 triumph.
The Rams turned a 5-3 deficit into a 18-11 lead through the first 10 minutes, keeping OPSU without a field goal for 7:24 during that stretch. The Aggies had more made turnovers (11) than free throws (10), which was more than they had made shots from the floor (nine) in the first half. During a stretch late in the first frame, Panhandle State was forced into three turnovers on three straight possessions.
Sebastian Karwoski recorded his fourth double-double of the 2019-2020 campaign with 14 points and 13 rebounds - he's achieved all four in less than 30 minutes on the court. He also had a season-high five assists, which led the team Saturday. In total, the Rams had assists on 23 of 30 made baskets, the most assists since 26 on 38 successful shots against Arlington Baptist.
Davon Berry pitched in 12, as did
LaMont Simmons in his return to action off a minor injrury suffered in the team's last home game against Langston - eight of those 12 points came from the line on 8-of-9 shooting.
Akeem White kept his double-digit scoring streak alive with 13 off the bench, his 13th game with at least 10 points in a row.
David Shepard popped off the bench with three of the team's eight makes from downtown.
With eight games remaining in the regular season, TXWES has a chance to topple a record that's been on the books since the 1963-64 campaign, in which the Rams shot 50 percent from the floor (809/1617). Texas Wesleyan is shooting 49.6 percent (678/1367) from the field, 11th best in the NAIA, one of the most efficient-shooting teams in the illustrious history of the men's basketball program. Keep an eye on this record as the team rounds the corner to the postseason.
Despite the Sooner Athletic Conference being one of the toughest in the nation - quite possibly the toughest - it's a bit top heavy this season so far - only four of the 11 teams, including the Rams, are above .500 since SAC play tipped off. Mid-America Christian finally lost its first game, an 81-74 tilt on the road at John Brown January 30, which has also beaten TXWES on its home floor. That leaves Georgetown (KY) as the lone unbeaten in the NAIA's Division I.
