BETHANY, OK - The No. 20 Texas Wesleyan Rams (16-6, 9-4 SAC) - on pace to break the program record for field goal percentage in a season - shot a whopping 60 percent in the first half, but couldn't find enough buckets in the second half to top the on-fire Eagles of Southwestern Christian (13-8, 6-7 SAC) in a 100-89 defeat.
The two teams were on pace to score 100. In the first 20 minutes, TXWESÂ led narrowly, 51-49 in a half that saw 14 combined threes go in, including nine from the Rams.
Peyton Sallee had 17 of his 26 points in the first half, including back-to-back threes inside three minutes to go that gave the Rams a 51-43 advantage. A 9-0 run by SCU gave the Eagles the lead and from there Southwestern Christian pulled away.
Texas Wesleyan did make a run late -
Akeem White's bucket in the paint with 1:08 remaining cut the deficit to seven, 94-87 - but SCU made all six of its free throws down the stretch.
White sprung off the bench to score 18 with nine rebounds on 8-of-11 from the floor.
Davon Berry scored 10, eight coming from the line on a perfect night from the charity stripe. Berry has made 19 of his last 22 free throws, coincidentally what the Rams shot as a team Thursday. Three times in the last seven games, TXWES has missed three free throws or less, shooting a combined 60-of-67 in those battles.
It's tough to sweep a long road trip. The last time Texas Wesleyan played at least three games in a row on the road and won them all dates back to the 2008-09 campaign. After two games at home, the Rams will have to go on another three-game road trip (February 15-22), the third and final such road haul this season.
Oklahoma City comes to town Saturday at 4 p.m. The Rams narrowly took out the Stars earlier this season in Oklahoma, 83-80.Â
