OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The Texas Wesleyan Women's Golf team posted its first win of the season after shooting a season low 291 to win the Sydney Cox Invitational at Lincoln Park Golf Club on Monday.
For the Lady Rams, it was a comeback win over a top-10 ranked team in Oklahoma City and Bellevue, who are vying for the highest spot in the upcoming ratings announcement, which has since been delayed until the spring.
"This was a huge win for us," commented head coach
Kevin Millikan.
The win marks program win 11, and the team now has three wins and two runner-up finishes in the last five tournaments.
When asked about the streak Millikan said, "We're always just thinking about the current week, but it's just a testament to the quality of players who have chosen to come to Texas Wesleyan and put the work in each week."
The field of 62 golfers representing 13 institutions from five different states played the Lincoln Park East course (par-70, 5,856 yards) in the first round, before taking on the West course (par-72, 5,962 yards) today to cap the 36-hole tournament. Conditions were cool and windy in the mornings, with calmer conditions as the sun warmed the course.
Emily Hunt led the Lady Rams on day one at 2-over, and she continued the strong play into the final round at even-par to finish the tournament in a tie for fourth.
Katherine Adelmann had a breakout performance today, getting low with a 3-under 69. Adelmann tallied seven birdies, including five birdies in the final nine holes. She climbed 26 spots on the leaderboard to finish 10th.
"I'm really proud of
Emily Hunt and
Katherine Adelmann," continued Millikan. "Emily just played so steady this week, and I knew when I recruited Kate she capable of going low. 30 on the back nine really helped seal the tournament for us, and I expect more great rounds from her in the future."
After round one, host Oklahoma City held the lead at +17 (297), while Bellevue was two strokes behind in second at +19 (299). TXWES was third at +20 (300), along with Redlands CC, the same Redlands CC team that out-dueled the Lady Rams for the win at the Dornick Hills Invite just a week ago. McLennan CC sat in fifth at +27 (307) to round out the top five.
When the dust settled in round two, it was the Lady Rams (+23) on top, this time with the Cougars of Redlands CC (+25) trailing by 2-strokes in second. Bellevue (+29) fell one spot to third, while Oklahoma City (+38) fell three spots to fourth. McLennan (+42) remained in the fifth spot.
The team paced the field in par 3 scoring at 6-over, and pars with 109.
The Lady Rams finish up the fall season at the Texas A&M – Commerce Lion Classic. The two-day 54-hole tournament will be played at Texas Rangers Golf Club in Arlington, Texas starting on Monday, October 26.
