The Lady Rams improve to 2-0

by Mark Warde

FORT WORTH – Texas Wesleyan University volleyball rode the hot hand of Arianna Alvarado to a three-game sweep of Southwestern Christian University (Okla.), 25-18, 25-15, 25-16, to remain unbeaten.

Alvarado, a sophomore education major from San Antonio, delivered 10 kills in 17 attempts with only three hitting errors as the Lady Rams collectively hit .264. The sophomore was one of four players on her team toting an attack percentage over .400. Her .412 efficiency allowed the club, now 2-0 overall, to make short work of the visiting Eagles.

Nyia Anderson, a freshman biology major from Grand Prairie, swatted nine kills and served three of the team's ten aces. Middle Blocker Bailey Foy (Paris, TX) blasted seven kills in just nine swings without a single miscue to hit a sizzling .778.

Also contributing to the short match were sophomore business major Sydney Charlton and Harker Heights, Texas product McKayla Flowers (business), who registered six kills in 11 tries (.455) and three in five (.400) respectively.

Senior setter Morgan Burns, an exercise science major from LaVernia, TX, set the table with 15 helpers on a night when the team had 34 assists. Emily Brooks, a freshman exercise science major from Montgomery, Ala., added seven assists, while Euless, Texas product Andrea Malek (biochemistry) and had five. Brooks triggered five aces from the back line.

Pounding a combined 38 kills, 15, 13 and 10 in each set respectively, TXWES cruised to a victory in which SCU mustered only 16 kills among 13 kills to hit a combined .037. Anderson had a complete floor game, including a team-high seven digs. Her defensive scoops were part of a 39-17 advantage in the category, which extended rallies and snuffed out the same by the Eagles.

After starting the first set 15 kills against five errors, which took 40 attacks, head coach Jessica Ransom's troops upped the ante. Firmly applying the gas, they drilled 13 kills, with a lone misfire in just 19 swings to hit .632.

Texas Wesleyan returns to the court on Friday, Oct. 23, against Wayland Baptist. The 7 p.m. match is slated for Plainview, Texas.

The Lady Rams, 26-10 overall and a second place 17-3 in last year's Sooner Athletic Conference, are tied in first with Southwestern Assemblies of God University with 2-0 starts. The two will meet at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30, in Waxahachie.
